Calgary is on track to deliver one of the most transformative infrastructure projects in its history — the Green Line Light Rail Transit (LRT). Designed as a modern, efficient, and sustainable transit solution, the Green Line will connect underserved communities, reduce traffic congestion, and create new opportunities for economic growth. Phase 1 of the project, currently underway, will extend from Shepard in the southeast to Eau Claire in the downtown core, covering approximately 18 kilometres. This segment includes key stations such as Ogden, Ramsay/Inglewood, and the Beltline, linking residential neighborhoods to major employment and cultural hubs. The Green Line is more than just a transportation upgrade — it is a city-building initiative. The project’s design incorporates urban renewal features, such as pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, public art installations, and enhanced green spaces. It also aligns with Calgary’s climate goals by encouraging transit use over car travel, thereby cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Economic benefits are significant as well. The Green Line is expected to generate thousands of construction jobs and stimulate development along its corridor, attracting businesses and housing projects to areas with improved accessibility. Once completed, the Green Line will become the backbone of Calgary’s LRT network, seamlessly integrating with existing Red and Blue lines. Future phases are planned to extend the route north to Keystone Hills, ultimately creating a 46-kilometre line that serves nearly a quarter of Calgary’s population. As construction progresses, the Green Line stands as a symbol of Calgary’s commitment to building a more connected, sustainable, and livable city for generations to come.
