Academic Antimicrobial Stewardship Physician Educator

The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for an Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinician Educator to be based at the University of Alberta Hospital.  Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.  The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff.  

The Division of Infectious Diseases has over 30 Faculty members and provides clinical services to all acute care facilities in Edmonton, and consultative services to Northern Alberta as well as western NWT and parts of BC. There are established specialty programs in Transplant Infectious Diseases, HIV Medicine, Viral Hepatitis, Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship as well as close relationships with Provincial and regional microbiology laboratories, and Public Health. The Division boasts one of the longest running and most highly regarded Canadian postgraduate training programs in Infectious Diseases. It has a long history of conducting clinical trials with dedicated Clinical Trial Unit infrastructure, and members of the Division are actively engaged across clinical, translational and basic science research.

The University of Alberta Hospital currently has an Antimicrobial Stewardship program that involves audit and feedback activities throughout the hospital and provision of virtual consult services to patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia admitted to hospitals without onsite Infectious diseases consultation services. The ASP program also provides education for students and residents in infectious diseases, medical microbiology and public health.

Key accountabilities of the Academic Antimicrobial Stewardship clinician educator will include, but will not be limited to clinical practice of inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical trainees, including Infectious Diseases subspecialty residents and Microbiology residents with specific focus on the principles and practice of Antimicrobial Stewardship.

Clinical practice (minimum 40-60% effort) may include, but not be limited to, inpatient ID consultation, ambulatory care and equitable participation in ID after hours call. Individual areas of clinical interest, may be incorporated into the role. The successful applicant will dedicate at least 30% of their time to research/innovation/education scholarship. 

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with certification in Infectious Diseases with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent), be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The successful candidate will also have training and experience in Antimicrobial Stewardship. Additional academic training such as a Master’s of Education or Quality is considered an asset, but not required.

Remuneration for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the income scale of the six-step Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP). 

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, which is in accordance with the Schedule A of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.
