About this job
Run your own district. Shape a fuel network members trust every day.
Calgary Co-op is looking for a District Manager, Fuel Retail Operations, to take full ownership of a group of fuel, convenience, car wash and propane sites. You will lead the managers who run them, own the results, and set the standard for service and safety across a business that members use every week.
This is a true general-management seat: your sites, your P&L, your team, your plan. You will work with senior leaders on the budget, capital plans and strategy that decide where our fuel business goes next.
- Location: Calgary, Alberta, with regular travel between your sites
- Reports to: Director, Fuel, Car Wash and Convenience
Calgary Co-op is owned by its members and is one of the largest retail co-operatives in North America. Founded in 1956, we serve Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, High River, Okotoks and Strathmore with food centres, pharmacies, gas stations, car washes, propane and more.
We have more than 400,000 members, about 3,850 team members and roughly $1.3 billion in annual sales. We keep investing in the communities we serve, most recently with a new Cochrane location that pairs a food centre with a gas station, touchless car wash and propane filling.
Our values are simple: Service, Caring & Excellence. We care about team members, member-owners, customers and communities, and we back it up with long-term investment rather than short-term thinking.
The role: your district, your results, your teamYou will be accountable for the overall performance and profitability of a group of fuel retail locations, covering fuel forecourts, convenience stores, car washes and propane. This is a role for a leader who likes to be out on the sites, spots opportunity fast and builds people up. In your first year, you can expect to:
- Raise sales, gross margin and customer satisfaction across your district
- Build a bench of strong managers who are ready for bigger roles
- Set a visible standard for safety, cleanliness and service at every site
- Help shape the budget, capital plans and strategy for Calgary Co-op's fuel business
Drive operational excellence
- Lead day-to-day operations across multiple fuel, convenience, car wash and propane locations
- Visit sites regularly to review, audit and coach, so every location meets our standards for service, merchandising, appearance and cleanliness
- Partner with each Gas Station Manager on a site-specific action plan that drives growth
- Keep sites staffed and running efficiently without losing service quality
Own financial performance
- Deliver annual targets for sales, gross margin, labor, operating expense and profitability
- Read the numbers across fuel, convenience, car wash and propane, including labor productivity, inventory and customer satisfaction, and act on what they show
- Find new profit through expense control, efficiency gains, promotional execution and sales initiatives
- Help build annual operating budgets, forecasts, capital plans and business strategy
Build and grow great leaders
- Recruit, develop, mentor and keep high-performing managers and team members
- Run performance reviews, development conversations and succession planning
- Create a culture of accountability, engagement, inclusion and continuous improvement
- Make sure every leadership team has the skills and training to lead well
Keep people safe and sites compliant
- Promote and enforce Health, Safety and Environmental programs at every location
- Investigate incidents and safety concerns, and make sure corrective actions happen quickly
- Support emergency response planning and risk management
- Ensure compliance with provincial, federal and municipal rules, industry standards and company policy
Must have
- High school diploma (Grade 12)
- 5+ years of progressive retail management experience
- 3+ years of multi-unit management experience in petroleum, convenience, food retail or a related field
- A proven record of leading and developing management teams
- Strong financial skills: budgets, P&L statements, labour costs and operating metrics
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
- A valid driver's licence and the ability to travel regularly between sites
Great to have
- Post-secondary education in business, management or a related field
- Hands-on experience with fuel, car wash or propane operations
- A track record of lifting sales, margin and customer scores across several sites
You are someone who
- Leads from the floor and is visible, approachable and fair
- Holds high standards and helps people meet them
- Makes decisions with data and still trusts your instincts
- Puts safety first, every shift
- Real ownership. Run a district with your name on the results, backed by a senior team that wants you to succeed.
- A seat at the table. Help shape budgets, capital plans and strategy for a fuel business that is still growing.
- A business that lasts. Co-op ownership means we plan for decades, not quarters, and we invest in our sites and our people.
- A place to grow. Succession planning is part of the job here, and that includes yours.
- A culture that cares. Service. Caring & Excellence are not slogans. They guide how we treat team members, members and neighbors.
If you have run multiple sites and want a district of your own, we would like to hear from you.
We thank all applicants, and only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
