The Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services is building a more resilient and sustainable health care system that can support Albertans getting care when and where they need it, while responding to system-wide health challenges, improving health outcomes, and maintaining fiscal responsibility. The ministry supports Albertans' health and well-being throughout their lives by protecting public health and promoting wellness; coordinating and delivering safe, person-centered, quality health services; health system planning and capital infrastructure planning; supporting innovative information management and technologies; regulating health care; and funding the health system.
The Health Analytics Branch provides population health information and analytical expertise to support health system planning, policy development, and decision-making. The branch compiles, analyzes, interprets, and communicates complex health information to help understand population health status, health trends, determinants of health, disease prevalence, health system use, and the health needs of specific populations across Alberta.
Role Responsibilities
Join a dynamic team supporting evidence-informed public health decision-making, where your epidemiology and health analytics expertise will help transform complex population health data into meaningful information that supports better outcomes for Albertans.
Reporting to the Manager of Population Health Assessment, the Epidemiologist provides specialized expertise in epidemiology, health data preparation, statistical analysis, data visualization, and the development of analytical reports and health information products.
As an Epidemiologist, you will provide scientific and analytical expertise to support population health assessment, with particular consideration for vulnerable and special populations, such as seniors and young children, as well as other specific population groups across Alberta. You will work collaboratively with internal and external partners to identify information needs, develop meaningful analytical products, interpret complex data, and provide evidence and advice to support informed decision-making.
In this role, you will:
- Provide epidemiological expertise for compiling and analyzing data to report on population health status, determinants, and risk factors.
- Support project teams to prepare health information/knowledge products to quantify trends and help assess policy options.
- Support branch and corporate initiatives to ensure continuous quality improvement.
- Create data visualizations such as reports, dashboards, or maps.
- Provide analytics support to population health stakeholders.
- Provide statistical support and advice to support the development and maintenance of population health surveillance methodologies and systems.

Qualifications
University graduation in a related field, such as Epidemiology, Public Health, Data Science, Social Sciences or a related discipline, plus two years of progressively responsible related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in an analytics-related field, as described below.
Equivalency
- One year of experience for one year of education OR
- One year of education for one year of experience.
The following experience is required:
- Data analysis related to epidemiology or public health.
- Data analysis using R, SAS, or other statistical analysis programs.
- Verbal or written communication of health data analysis.
- Work using Microsoft Windows using Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and PowerPoint.
- Coordinating multiple projects, priorities, and deliverables within tight timelines.
A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
The following experience is considered as assets:
- Data analysis using large datasets.
- Work applying knowledge Alberta’s health system and health service delivery organizations.
- Work using administrative health data.
- Data analysis or management with SQL, Snowflake, Git, or Bitbucket.
- Work completing code reviews and reproducible analytical workflows.
- Collaboration with diverse stakeholders in health or public health environments.

Hours of work are 08:15 AM to 4:30PM, Monday to Friday.
This is a full-time permanent position working 36.25 hours per week in downtown Edmonton.
