The Role
The Senior or Principal Instrumentation Designer provides expert-level design expertise and technical leadership for instrumentation and control (I&C) deliverables across major projects. The role is responsible for delivering high-quality instrumentation design packages that meet Worley, client, and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, while providing technical guidance and mentorship to design teams. The level of responsibility and technical leadership will vary based on project requirements and individual experience.
Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate, and review instrumentation design deliverables across the project lifecycle, including concept, FEED, detailed design, and construction support.
- Provide technical guidance to instrumentation designers and drafting teams, including task coordination, workload planning, and design reviews.
- Participate in project planning, progress reporting, checking, and quality assurance activities.
- Support project scope definition and manage design changes in accordance with project processes.
- Support procurement, construction, and commissioning activities, including requisition reviews, technical bid evaluations, vendor documentation, and resolution of site and vendor queries.
- Coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, piping, automation, and other disciplines to ensure integrated designs.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies between Worley and client design standards and requirements.
- Provide technical input into constructability, maintainability, operability, and process safety reviews.
- Identify technical risks and issues, develop practical solutions, and escalate where appropriate.
- Support and mentor junior designers and engineers, contributing to technical excellence and knowledge sharing.
- Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, including clients, vendors, and construction partners.
- Develop and review core I&C deliverables, including P&IDs, loop and wiring diagrams, instrument location drawings, junction box and marshalling panel layouts, instrument datasheets and specifications, I/O lists, cable and tray schedules, control narratives, cause and effect diagrams, material requisitions, and construction and engineering work packages.
- Apply working knowledge of instrumentation selection and application, including flow, level, temperature, and pressure measurement technologies and associated accessories.
Requirements
- Accredited Engineering Technology, Design, or related technical qualification.
- Significant experience in Instrumentation & Controls design on large, multidisciplinary industrial projects, with demonstrated progression to senior-level responsibilities.
- Strong working knowledge of I&C design systems, workflows, and document management tools such as SAP, KMS, or similar project systems.
- Experience participating in process safety and operability studies, such as HAZOP and LOPA, and translating outcomes into design requirements.
- Understanding of project scope development, workshare execution, and delegation of design activities across internal and external teams.
- Demonstrated ability to independently interpret, develop, review, and coordinate complex I&C drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Strong communication, coordination, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently while providing technical guidance and mentorship to other members of the design team.
- Registered technologist preferred.
For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is $102,682 to $160,630
