The Role
The Senior or Principal Instrumentation & Controls Engineer provides technical leadership and instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering expertise across projects for Worley and its customers. The role is responsible for delivering high-quality I&C engineering services while progressively taking on greater technical leadership, project responsibility, client interaction, and mentorship of engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead and execute instrumentation and control engineering activities across assigned projects or project scopes, with increasing responsibility for complex scopes and technical leadership.
- Manage and deliver instrumentation engineering services that meet Worley, client, and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, on time and within budget.
- Support project planning and delivery, including participation in relevant meetings, preparation of progress reports, and compliance with required checking and quality assurance procedures.
- Manage project requirements and ensure scope is clearly defined, with changes managed in accordance with established change management processes.
- Coordinate instrumentation engineering activities with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated project delivery and effective workshare.
- Provide technical advice and support during procurement, construction, commissioning, TA, and NTA activities, including oversight of requisitions, technical bid evaluations, vendor documentation, and purchase orders.
- Provide technical review and oversight of instrumentation engineering deliverables, ensuring quality, consistency, and compliance with project requirements.
- Proactively identify and resolve technical issues, discrepancies, and risks between Worley and client requirements, developing appropriate solutions and escalating when required.
- Communicate effectively with engineering teams, clients, vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and support to intermediate and junior engineers and designers.
- At the Principal level, provide broader technical leadership, oversee complex instrumentation engineering scopes, support delegation and workshare planning, and contribute to the effective delivery of instrumentation engineering services across projects.
Requirements
- Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline.
- Currently registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA.
- Progressive experience in direct instrumentation and control engineering on multidisciplinary industrial projects.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, review, and interpret I&C designs, drawings, calculations, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong working knowledge of I&C deliverables, including:
- Junction box and marshalling panel design
- P&IDs
- Loop, wiring, and instrument location drawings
- Motor control and interconnection schematics
- Instrument installation details
- Instrument datasheets and specifications
- I/O lists
- Bills of material
- Cable, conduit, and tray schedules
- Control narratives and philosophies
- Cause and effect diagrams
- Material requisitions
- Construction and engineering work packages
- Working knowledge of instrumentation selection and application, including flow, level, temperature, and pressure measurement technologies.
- Experience with engineering systems and workflows such as SAP and KMS, or equivalent.
- Experience participating in HAZOP/LOPA and incorporating outcomes into engineering design.
- Understanding of project scope impacts, workshare, and TA/NTA execution requirements.
- Strong communication, coordination, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced personnel.
- At the Principal level, demonstrated ability to lead complex engineering scopes, exercise sound technical judgment, manage competing project requirements, and provide technical leadership to project teams and stakeholders.
For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is $122,176 to $206,123
