This position provides professional, attentive food and beverage service to guests of Ernest’s Dining Room. The role is primarily focused on front-of-house service, including welcoming and engaging with guests, taking food and beverage orders, providing menu knowledge and recommendations, serving food and beverages, processing payments, and maintaining dining room standards.
The successful candidate will have strong customer service and communication skills, be comfortable working in a professional dining environment, and contribute to creating an exceptional guest experience. Additional responsibilities include dining room setup and closing duties, maintaining cleanliness and organization, and supporting special events and functions as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver professional, attentive, and welcoming service to guests of Ernest’s Dining Room.
- Greet guests, take food and beverage orders, and provide knowledgeable information about menu items, daily features, and beverage selections.
- Serve food and beverages in accordance with established service standards and dining room procedures.
- Set up, maintain, clear, and reset tables and dining areas before, during, and after service.
- Process guest payments accurately using the point-of-sale system.
- Anticipate guest needs, respond to questions and requests, and contribute to an exceptional overall dining experience.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and appropriate stock levels throughout the dining room and service areas.
- Assist with the setup and service of special events, receptions, and other functions held within Ernest’s Dining Room.
- Work collaboratively with culinary instructors, students, and other team members in a learning-focused hospitality environment.
- Complete opening, closing, and general cleaning duties associated with front-of-house restaurant operations.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with a professional, guest-focused approach.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to confidently engage with a diverse range of guests.
- Ability to learn and communicate food, beverage, and menu knowledge, including daily features and dietary considerations.
- Ability to manage multiple tables and priorities while maintaining attentive and efficient service.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to anticipate guest needs throughout the dining experience.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a front-of-house team and collaboratively with culinary students, instructors, and other staff.
- Comfortable using point-of-sale systems and accurately processing various forms of payment.
- Ability to follow established service standards, procedures, and oral and written instructions.
- Ability to remain professional, organized, and composed in a busy restaurant and event environment.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs unassisted.
- Ability to safely perform duties requiring the use of a step stool or ladder.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including daytime and evening shifts, and occasional special events.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 9 or equivalent.
- Previous front-of-house restaurant serving experience is required; experience in a full-service or upscale dining environment is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience providing direct guest service, taking food and beverage orders, and working within a restaurant dining room environment.
- Experience using a point-of-sale (POS) system and processing guest payments.
- Alberta ProServe certification is required or must be obtained prior to serving alcoholic beverages.
- Food Safety and Sanitation certification is required and must be obtained before completion of the probationary period.
- First Aid certification may be required depending on operational requirements.
- Equivalent combinations of education and directly related experience may be considered.
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).
Classification – Service Worker
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
Remuneration
Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay.
