Job Description
This position supports student success and retention by being a first point of contact. The Success Advisor will:
· Provide early support, first semester transition advising and success planning for new learners including transitions to further education pathways
· Develop and provide support for a College-wide Early Support and Retention program to support student success
Lead At-Risk student identification, and support
irst semester transition advising and success planning to students
· Meets with new Bow Valley College students to discuss potential barriers to success and resources and supports, including external supports, that would mitigate those challenges.
· Builds positive relationships with students, faculty and employees to best determine a success plan to meet individual needs.
· Works with college services, Academic departments, and Student Services staff to provide internal linkages to appropriate supports that will increase student capacity for success.
· Develops, implements, delivers and maintains a Student Success Planning tool. Through a holistic and systematic approach, considers academic, personal, mental/psychological, physical, professional/career, financial, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of students’ circumstances to create a comprehensive and individual Student Success Plan that integrates and facilitates access to any relevant services to support success.
· Assists students in navigating the campus and technology tools necessary to activate their Student Success Plan.
· Schedules students for appointments with appropriate Student Services’ area and connects students with assessment and orientation sessions, and other support services as appropriate to commence the Student Success Plan.
Early Support Program Development
· Maintains awareness of early support programs/systems and approaches across the post-secondary system and assesses the relevance to the unique nature of the Bow Valley College student population and academic environment.
· Identifies best practices in early support that should be considered at Bow Valley College and develop a phased implementation plan that takes into consideration budget, human resources and systems, starting with simple systems that align with the Comprehensive Institutional Plan.
· Works collaboratively with other employees and departments at the College to obtain buy-in and develop an early support program that is both easy to use for employees and effective in supporting student success.
· Monitors, evaluates and assesses the early support program and determines any improvements or changes necessary for ongoing or increased effectiveness.
At-Risk Student Identification and Support
· Provides outreach throughout the student life cycle, both in general and through targeted communications to students who are identified as at-risk, to identify and connect appropriate supports as necessary to support success.
· Contributes to the identification of disengaged or other at-risk students through:
o Self-referral of students and/or referral from other departments, faculty or staff
o Assessing available information including but not limited to D2L analytics, student information system records, instructor reports, and Student Services referral forms/systems.
· Develops practices and maintains systems to identify and clarify the needs of students at-risk of disengagement from their studies. Collaborate on best practices within department areas and implements proactive and systematic outreach and structured support; monitors effectiveness; collates data and produces metrics.
· Delivers and evaluates intervention programs targeting the success and retention of identified students or groups of students.
· Supports identified students by:
o Meeting directly with students to determine factors that are impeding success
o Working directly with students or groups of students to provide one-on-one and/or group/workshop support
o Making appropriate referrals to supports available through Learner Success Services, academic departments, other service areas and/or agencies or services outside of Bow Valley College.
o Connecting with incoming students to ensure they are aware of available resources and support
Identify trends and causes in learner attrition rates and impact on retention
Minimum Qualifications
- Three years of related experience
- Bachelor’s Degree
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with assessment of barriers, student advising, coaching or motivational interviewing is an asset.
- Knowledge of common barriers faced by adult learners, and community and College sources of support.
- Knowledge of trends in post-secondary student services and factors influencing student success.
- Fluency in more than one language is an asset.
- Ability to provide direct support to adult learners in overcoming basic barriers including – but not limited to – mental health, financial concerns, time-management, organizational, and LMS utilization.
- Strong interpersonal skills appropriate for working with adult learners.
