Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at Campus Saint-Jean, Edmonton, South Campus, Edmonton, and North Campus, Edmonton.
The Landscape Services Worker II – Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Manager, Landscape Services in the provision of Grounds services. In addition to carrying out the regular duties of the Landscape Services Worker II - Grounds position, the Landscape Services Worker II - Supervisor has additional areas of responsibility including monitoring and reporting staff performance to manager, time card approval, vacation scheduling, guidance & co-ordination to the team of staff delivering area landscape services within their designated service area.
Landscape Services Worker II - Supervisor will be responsible as an acting Manager when the Manager is absent. The position performs a vast number of duties using heavy, light and small equipment, as well as hand tools and manual labor. These duties include (but are not limited to) the maintenance and construction of hard/soft landscaping, pond maintenance, furnishings, signs, snow removal, irrigation installation and repair, pruning, special event set up and take downs, miscellaneous task and daily repairs/maintenance of equipment used for each task listed above. These activities are guided by standard operating procedures, site plans, blueprints, excavation permits and traffic disruption permits.
- Team Leadership & Training: Guiding area staff and other LSW2s by scheduling daily tasks, approving timecards, managing vacations, and ensuring everyone completes mandatory safety and equipment training (like WHMIS and Grounds SOPs).
- Work Planning & Allocation: Coordinating workloads equitably for large-scale campus operations, including turf care, sweeping, pruning, and managing staff for outdoor site bookings.
- Quality Assurance & Site Inspections: Partnering with the manager as part of the QA inspection team to review completed work, manage contractors, identify service deficiencies, and review preliminary landscape designs.
- Full-Scale Landscape & Pond Maintenance: Executing both soft landscaping (planting, grading, sodding) and specialized pond upkeep, which includes checking PH/algae levels, cleaning debris, and maintaining surrounding greenery.
- Advanced Irrigation Management: Installing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex irrigation systems that communicate via satellite, requiring blueprint reading, utility coordination, and winter blow-outs using heavy diesel compressors.
- Campus Safety, Infrastructure & Fleet Care: Managing critical seasonal snow/ice removal, installing or repairing campus infrastructure (fencing, signage, concrete curbs, benches), and performing diagnostic maintenance and repairs on small engine equipment.
Education:
- High School Grade 12
- A valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license is required.
- Must be able to provide a recent copy of a three-year driver’s abstract with no more than six (6) demerits and/or two (2) moving violations within the last two years.
The following would be desirable:
- Horticulture Diploma or Journeyman Landscape Gardener License
- First Aid Certificate
- WHMIS Certificate
- Excellent understanding of University Standards for Grounds
- Small engine and tool repair experience
- Understanding of University of Alberta Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P) policies and
procedures - Experience with landscape management planning
- Experience with management planning for ice & snow control
- U of A Supervisory Leadership Program
