A serious crime in a small, busy lake region
Eckville is a town of just over 1,000 people northwest of Sylvan Lake, a community that usually makes headlines for lake days, patios, and bumper‑to‑bumper weekend traffic rather than police investigations. In the summer, Sylvan Lake’s population can effectively triple as day‑trippers and cottagers pack the waterfront, restaurants, and bars, making it one of central Alberta’s busiest beach towns.
That seasonal draw spills into nearby communities like Eckville, where hotel bars and local hangouts serve both residents and people cutting across the region for a day at the lake. A robbery in the middle of the day, at a spot that caters to locals and visitors, hits differently in a place that relies so heavily on tourism and word‑of‑mouth reputation.

What RCMP are hoping the public can provide
Investigators have released a surveillance still of the suspect in dark clothing, holding a bright item as he walks outside on what appears to be gravel beside the building. They believe more video is out there from doorbell cameras, business security systems, or dashcams parked or driving on 50 Street around noon that day.
They’re especially interested in footage that shows a person matching the suspect’s clothing, a vehicle they may have used, or anyone leaving the area quickly after 12 p.m. Even a few seconds of video can help RCMP solidify a timeline, confirm a direction of travel, or connect this robbery to other armed incidents in the central Alberta corridor that investigators are also reviewing.
A reminder heading into peak Sylvan Lake season
For many Albertans, a trip to Sylvan Lake is a summer ritual long days at the beach, crowded sidewalks, and packed patios are part of the draw. Local officials have previously urged visitors to plan trips carefully and be mindful of crowds and safety as the town fills up on hot weekends.
This robbery serves as a reminder that while the region is known as a fun, busy summer escape, police still rely heavily on residents, workers, and visitors to report what they see, share footage, and help keep smaller communities like Eckville safe.
How to contact Sylvan Lake RCMP
Anyone who was in the area of the Eckville Hotel or on 50 Street around 12 p.m. on May 9 is asked to review their video and contact Sylvan Lake RCMP at 310‑RCMP with any information that might help.
