Accommodations are available during the hiring process, upon request.As a Business Strategist, you will perform research and analysis to advise Waste & Recycling Services (WRS) senior leadership on how to achieve strategic waste-related objectives and business goals. You will research emerging issues, trends, and innovation in the waste sector that may impact WRS' ability to meet strategic waste management goals or provide new opportunities for service delivery. You will also analyze potential advantages and disadvantages to customers, interest holders and WRS to develop strategy and policy recommendations. You will represent WRS when engaging with customers, internal partners, other municipalities, Non-Government Organizations, waste industry partners, media, and provincial and federal governments. Primary duties include:
- Lead projects to develop waste-related policies and strategies by conducting current state assessments, establishing strategy goals and objectives, identifying and assessing policy and strategy options, conducting customer research and engagement, assessing risks, formulating recommendations, and establishing guidance for strategy implementation and governance.
- Gather and analyze information on emerging issues and opportunities, waste industry trends and innovations, interest holder and customer needs, and other business-related information.
- Write reports and develop presentations to bring forward recommendations to Waste & Recycling senior leadership, Committees of Council and Council.
- Conduct research projects to enhance understanding of Calgary's waste, interest holder and customer opinion and behaviours, and industry activities.
- Provide research, analysis and recommendations for external financing opportunities, and develop funding applications.
- A degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Business Administration, Management, Economics or a related field.
- At least 8 years of experience in developing policy and strategy, conducting research, analyzing data, and providing recommendations and advice to colleagues, other business units, senior management, and governance bodies such as City Council.
- Previous experience with waste reduction and waste management is an asset.
Previous experience working within a large, complex organization in matters of change management, relationship management, data management, risk assessment, financial reporting, customer engagement, bylaws, program reviews, and managing contracts is considered an asset.
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with strong communication, facilitation, and presentation skills, political acumen, and the ability to analyze and interpret data for a variety of audiences.

- Compensation: Pay Grade 12 $48.54 - 64.88 per hour
- Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
- Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
