Position Summary
The Prospect Analyst plays a key role in helping Bow Valley College build meaningful relationships and achieve its fundraising and revenue generation goals. Reporting to the Manager, Advancement, you will collect, analyze and translate research into actionable insights that help identify new prospects, strengthen relationships with existing donors, and support strategic fundraising and partnership opportunities.
Working closely with the Advancement, Fund Development and Alumni Engagement teams, you will research individuals, alumni, corporations and foundations to identify prospects and assess their capacity, interests, philanthropic activity and connections to the College’s priorities. Your research will directly support annual fundraising, major gift cultivation, alumni engagement, strategic partnerships and the development of a healthy and sustainable fundraising pipeline.
This role combines research, analysis, relationship intelligence and data management. You will provide insights that help frontline fundraisers determine where to focus their efforts, inform moves management and solicitation strategies, and identify emerging opportunities across education, philanthropy, workforce development and strategic partnerships.
What You'll Be Doing
Prospect Research & Analysis: Lead prospecting activities by using creative research techniques and a range of formal and informal data sources to uncover information that supports fundraising and relationship development. This includes monitoring news and trends, conducting competitor and sector analysis, and using prospecting and advancement platforms such as iWave and Raiser's Edge.
Your research will help build a comprehensive understanding of prospective donors and partners, including their financial capacity, philanthropic interests, background, relationships and potential alignment with Bow Valley College’s priorities.
You will:
Develop clear, detailed prospect profiles that translate research into useful insights for fundraising colleagues.
Assess financial capacity, philanthropic tendencies and linkages to the College’s fundraising priorities.
Develop and implement ethical research and intelligence-gathering strategies.
Monitor trends in priority sectors and the competitive landscape across education and philanthropy to identify emerging opportunities and potential major donors.
Serve as the primary lead for developing prospecting lists and research profiles in collaboration with the Fund Development and Alumni Engagement (FDAE) team.
Support the Alumni Engagement portfolio by identifying opportunities to strengthen alumni volunteer and leadership pipelines, relationships, recognition, workforce partnerships and philanthropic engagement.
Work with the Development Officer, Corporations and Foundations, to develop the corporate and foundation grants calendar and identify future opportunities.
Use prospect research and analysis to inform recommendations for future products, services and fundraising opportunities based on identified priorities and needs.
Provide strategic counsel to frontline fundraisers, including insights and recommendations that support moves management and solicitation strategies.
Conduct research on individual and corporate prospects to support Sales and Workforce Development initiatives, partnerships and relationship-building.
Data & Pipeline Management: Accurate and well-maintained information is essential to effective prospect management. You will maintain comprehensive, current and user-friendly prospects, partner and donor records while working closely with the Lead, Pipeline Management and Lead, Advancement Operations to support database integrity.
You will regularly update and verify information, apply strong data classification and categorization practices, and ensure research can be easily accessed and used for future analysis and relationship development.
Event & Relationship Intelligence: You will also support Bow Valley College events and external relationship-building activities by preparing detailed event briefs that bring together relevant research, biographies, meeting objectives and guest backgrounds. Your ability to quickly synthesize information will help ensure internal and external stakeholders have the context they need to engage effectively with prospects, donors, partners and other key contacts.

You are comfortable working with databases, prospecting platforms and data management tools, and have a strong understanding of the importance of accurate, well-organized and accessible information.
You are also a strategic and collaborative partner who can work effectively with fundraisers, advancement professionals and colleagues across the College. You communicate complex research clearly, exercise sound judgment when gathering and using information, and understand the importance of ethical intelligence gathering and discretion when working with sensitive prospect, donor and partner information.
Above all, you are someone who can turn research into relationships and opportunities using your insights to help colleagues make informed decisions, strengthen the fundraising pipeline and advance Bow Valley College’s revenue generation and strategic partnership goals.
Qualifications
Minimum
Post-secondary certification, preferably in Business Administration, Communications, or a related field
2 years of progressive career experience in a fundraising or business development environment, preferably in prospect management, or equivalent amount of relevant experience in development, academic, non-profit or corporate environment.
An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
Preferred
Completion of a Diploma or Degree is considered an asset.
Working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, procedures and techniques.
General fundraising skills, including proficiency at supporting and participating in prospect management and tracking processes and staying informed of trends in the field.
Experience using a variety of public sources and research techniques to create profiles on companies, foundations, alumni, or individuals and analyze the information to succinctly bring forward anything that could help assist in relationship building activities. Analysis may include, assessments of financial capacity, presenting philanthropic tendencies, likelihood to give, and linkages to Bow Valley College fundraising and business development priorities
Knowledge of tools that prospect researchers can use to search for information as needed
Grant knowledge is an asset
Strong computer skills and demonstrated background in Internet-based research.
Experience working with a relational database is a necessity, as well as the Microsoft Office suite of products, including Excel.
Excellent oral and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy required to function effectively among campus fundraisers, high level campus administrators, volunteers and other constituencies to bring large scale projects to completion.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize work, and independently manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities while meeting deadlines.
Strong project management skills and problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to work in a demanding environment.
