About the Role

Working in the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) department, this position provides expert technical knowledge, guidance, and mentorship to ensure safe working environments across Mount Royal University. The Senior EH&S Officer works closely with employees, managers, and senior leadership to maintain regulatory compliance, integrate safe work practices into daily operations, and direct the control of health and safety hazards. The ideal candidate must possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong relationship-building abilities to liaise with internal stakeholders and external regulatory agencies, remain calm and decisive during high-pressure or emergency situations, and be physically capable of performing site inspections in complex environments while using personal protective equipment. The Environmental Health & Safety department is a small, close-knit team of four managing all aspects of safety across campus.

Responsibilities

• Work with and be the main contact for the MRU Facilities Building Operations, Aviation and several other areas on campus. 
• Inspect high-use areas, construction sites, and renovation spaces to ensure compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) standards and university health and safety policies.
• Conduct departmental safety audits, ergonomic assessments, and safety orientations.
• Act as a mentor and trainer to OH&S Officers, providing direction, feedback, and supervision of work.
• Maintain fire safety processes including fire warden tracking, fire drills, and fire extinguisher training while liaising with the Calgary Fire Department.
• Serve as redundant backup support for the Lab Safety and BioSafety Specialist.
  • Coordinate hazardous waste collection, proper classification, packaging, and disposal in accordance with government regulations.
  • Oversee WHMIS/GHS compliance, chemical inventories, and safety data sheet (SDS) maintenance.
• Monitor asbestos management, sample testing supervision, and database maintenance.
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and employee health and safety complaints to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Conduct worksite inspections for specialized equipment (e.g., fall arrest gear, lifts, ladders, hoists).
• Issue and enforce work stoppages or stop-work orders when imminent hazards are identified.
• Develop, implement, and update university-wide Health and Safety policies, procedures, standards, and safety management programs.
• Ensure alignment between departmental safety protocols and evolving provincial/federal legislation.
• Provide direction and consultation to management, supervisors, and safety committees on hazard evaluation, risk controls, and safety systems.
• Develop and deliver employee safety awareness, training workshops, and accident prevention initiatives.
• Maintain up-to-date expert knowledge of all government standards and legislation governing EH&S.
• Liaise with regulatory agencies and serve as a standing member on MRU Safety Advisory Groups and committees.
• Stay current on industry standard practices, deliver specialized technical training, and perform other related safety duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Two-Year Diploma from a Recognized Post-Secondary Institution or Journeyman Ticket (Bachelor’s Degree preferred).
• Professional designation CRSP, or equivalent.
• Demonstrated experience in an EH&S role focusing on machine and equipment safety, high-hazard work (fall protection, confined spaces, hazardous energy), and contract safety management.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta OH&S legislation, Building/Fire Codes, WHMIS/GHS, and Certificate of Recognition (COR) standards.
• Proven ability to build positive relationships, influence stakeholders, and communicate effectively with all levels of leadership (including Deans, AVPs, and Vice Presidents).
• Strong leadership skills to direct, mentor, and evaluate the work of other safety officers.
• Ability to handle confidential personnel situations with discretion, sensitivity, and professional judgment.
• Physical ability to work in varied outdoor/indoor environments, climb ladders, and wear required PPE (including respirators).

Salary Range: $83,738.20 - $105,978.60
