Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person (4 days in office, 1 day remote). Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
Reporting directly to the Manager of the Social Work Team, the Social Worker role centers on delivering holistic, individualized, student-centered support aimed at helping students navigate life’s challenges, strengthen daily stability, and facilitate positive change in any area of life. You will operate within ACSW Standards of Practice and legislative frameworks while managing a diverse caseload, spanning mental health, personal wellness, academics, life skill development, family dynamics, system navigation, and other student-identified needs. The Social Worker is a vital actor within multidisciplinary teams and interdisciplinary spaces, collaborating closely with other social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, physicians, and key campus and community partners.
Beyond generalist social work practice and case management, this role includes occasional development and facilitation of psychoeducational workshops, consultations with staff and faculty, with the potential for additional programming opportunities to foster campus education, awareness, and care.
- Caseload & Care Plan Management: Managing a caseload of students with a variety of needs and priorities within a purpose-oriented and reflection-based framework. Service delivery is designed to support student independence and address student-identified needs, goals, mental health concerns and severity.
- Scope of Practice: Conducting service provision using the ACSW’s social work professional scope of practice to develop a thorough understanding of presenting student needs and identity, and triaging requests for mental health and wellness services.
- Interdisciplinary Care + Service Transition: Coordinates collaborative care between campus and community partners while ensuring seamless transitions, regulatory compliance, and student autonomy.
- Documentation & Regulatory Compliance: Maintaining accurate, complete student records and data collection using the designated electronic medical system while adhering to privacy legislation (POPA and HIA), University policies, and ACSW Standards of Practice.
- Partnerships & Outreach: Building and maintaining strong working relationships across campus and community networks. Participating in outreach activities across the campus community to support mental health, including education through workshops and presentations, and providing consultations to staff and faculty.
- Bachelor of Social Work Degree is required, with consideration given to lived experience and work experience.
- Proven experience and/or expertise in the areas of social work and standards compliance, case management, crisis intervention, prevention work, supportive counselling/advising, and interdisciplinary team navigation.
- A working knowledge of mental health and suicide prevention is crucial.
- Member in good standing with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).
- 2 to 5 years of applicable social work experience and/or frontline work, or outreach experience in a fast-paced, change-oriented environment or at an adult/post-secondary institution.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with proven ability to establish trusting relationships.
- Ability to appreciate the complexity of mental health, mental health stigma, and support-seeking behaviour from an intersectional lens that is trauma-informed and culturally responsive.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Experience in supporting diverse communities and populations.
- Experience providing crisis and short-term counselling support, information and referrals.
- Ability to work with confidential information in a professional and sensitive manner.
- Ability to work independently and cohesively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
