Tenured or Tenure-Track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor Position in Engineering Education, Communication, and AI-Enabled Learning

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a faculty position in Engineering Education, Communication and AI-Enabled Learning at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor.

This position represents a strategic investment in advancing the future of engineering education at the University of Alberta. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping how engineers learn, communicate, and practice in an era of artificial intelligence, digital collaboration, and rapidly evolving societal challenges.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and scholarship at the intersection of engineering pedagogy and communication, while shaping institutional approaches to engineering education innovation, curriculum evolution, and AI-integrated learning environments. This position offers flexibility to develop a research program in areas such as: engineering rhetoric and technical communication; learning and pedagogy in the era of large language models (LLMs) and generative AI; AI-enabled tools in engineering practice and education; curriculum design and assessment in engineering; or the intersection of engineering communication with policy, regulation, sustainability, climate change, and societal impact. We seek a collaborative scholar and educator whose work advances how engineers learn, communicate, and engage with emerging technologies.

The responsibilities of the role include active participation in teaching, research, and service:

Teaching (40%): Participation in teaching programs, including classroom teaching, supervision of students conducting research, and personal interactions with and advising students. An Academic Faculty member may decide on specific course content and instructional methodology, recognizing the approved course description, and academic policy approved by the Department, the Faculty, and the University. Teaching is year-round with most courses in the Fall (September to December) and Winter (January to April) semesters. Teaching assignments are decided in discussion with the Department Chair. The candidate for this position is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering communication and/or pedagogy and/or critical thinking. They are also expected to lead the integration of advanced communication and pedagogy strategies across design, capstone, and graduate engineering curricula.

Research (40%): Participation in research, including the preparation or performance of creative works and reflective inquiry, and disseminating research results by means appropriate to the discipline. Academic Faculty members are encouraged to seek research funding from granting agencies or other sources. The successful candidate for this position is expected to lead an internationally visible research program in engineering education and/or communication including areas such as rhetoric, AI-augmented learning, curriculum design, assessment, and/or related areas. They are also expected to develop an externally-funded research program appropriate to the candidate's disciplinary background (e.g., NSERC, SSHRC, or other relevant funding agencies).

Service (20%): An Academic Faculty member shall be actively engaged in service to the University and participate in the collegial responsibilities of departmental, Faculty, and University governance. Provision of service to the discipline of the Academic Faculty member; participation in the governance of the University, the Faculty, and the Department, and dissemination of knowledge to the general public by making available the Academic Faculty member’s expertise and knowledge of the discipline.

Candidates must hold a PhD in engineering, engineering education, rhetoric and technical communication, education, English, communication studies, science and technology studies (STS), or a closely related field. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or strong potential in teaching and will show evidence of, or potential for, a strong scholarly record in engineering education and communication. Experience with pedagogical innovation, educational technology, or AI applications in learning is required. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure through the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA, https://www.apega.ca/) is an asset for candidates from engineering backgrounds; it is not expected of candidates from humanities or social science disciplines. Candidates from engineering backgrounds without current licensure who hold CEAB-accredited or equivalent degrees are expected to pursue licensure within five years.
