A Strange Call Near Closing Time
What initially sounded like a routine trespassing complaint in Hanna took an unexpected turn earlier this week.
On April 8, Hanna RCMP were called to a local business after reports of an individual refusing to leave at closing time. The suspect was described as disoriented, dressed entirely in brown, and unusually small standing roughly two feet tall and weighing about 40 pounds.
An Unusual Suspect Revealed
When officers arrived, it quickly became clear this was no ordinary situation.
The “trespasser” was, in fact, a beaver. Despite the unusual circumstances, the responding officer approached the situation seriously, using calm, controlled de-escalation techniques to manage the animal and prevent any harm to people or property.
De-Escalation Over Force
According to RCMP, no force was used during the encounter. Instead, the officer spent time carefully guiding the beaver out of the business.
There was some speculation that the animal may have been attempting to take firewood from the storefront possibly for building purposes but this has not been confirmed.
After some persistent coaxing, the beaver was successfully ushered out and made its way back toward a more natural environment.
Not Dangerous, But Memorable
RCMP noted that the animal was not considered dangerous, although witnesses did point out one defining feature a notably large tail.
No injuries or damages were reported, and the situation was resolved without escalation.

A Lighthearted Moment for the Community
While police calls often involve serious situations, this incident offered a rare and lighthearted moment for both officers and the community.
Encounters like this are not entirely uncommon in smaller Alberta communities, where wildlife and urban spaces often overlap. Still, it’s not every day that a beaver becomes the subject of an official police response.
For Hanna residents, the unexpected visitor has quickly become something of a local story one that adds a bit of humour to the week while also highlighting the importance of handling wildlife encounters calmly and safely.
