The old Peavey Mart on Carry Drive has a tenant again.
Lordco Auto Parts opened at 64 Carry Drive SE on August 21, taking over the building that sat empty after the farm and ranch chain liquidated every store in Canada last year. It is Lordco's seventh Alberta location and the 87th store in a network that until recently was almost entirely British Columbian.
The public grand opening is Saturday, September 12. The store is already open and trading in the meantime.

Seven days a week matters more than it sounds. Sunday hours on an auto parts counter is the difference between finishing a weekend job and leaving the car on jack stands until Monday.
What is actually in the store
Three things, broadly.
General automotive parts and accessories. The core counter business — the stuff you go in for when something has failed and you would rather not wait three days for a dealer part.
A dedicated truck centre. This is the piece worth knowing about in southeast Alberta. It is set up for truck, SUV and Jeep owners specifically, and Lordco runs 19 of these across its network. In a region where the working vehicle is usually a half-ton, a dedicated truck department is a different proposition from a general parts aisle.
Car care essentials. Oil, fluids, filters, cleaning and detailing supplies — the recurring-purchase side of the business.
Who is running it
The store manager is Kyle Clark, who transferred in from Lordco's Revelstoke, B.C. location. He has been with the company about 10 years, starting as a delivery driver and moving through sales into management, including seven years in Revelstoke and four of those as store manager.
The store employs 18 people, 17 of them hired locally. For a market Medicine Hat's size, filling nearly a full roster from the local labour pool is the part of an opening announcement that tends to matter most.
Why an empty big box getting filled is the real story
Peavey Mart's Carry Drive store did not close because of anything Medicine Hat did. On January 27, 2025, Red Deer-based Peavey Industries LP obtained an initial order for creditor protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and began closing sales at every remaining Canadian location — 90 Peavey Mart stores and six MainStreet Hardware locations.
The company blamed record-low consumer confidence, inflation, rising operating costs, supply disruptions and a difficult regulatory environment. Medicine Hat's store ran its closing-out sale and went dark like the rest.
Big-box vacancies in a city of this size do not always get filled, and when they do it is often by something smaller carved into the shell. A single tenant taking the whole footprint, with 18 jobs attached, is the better outcome.
Who Lordco is
Lordco is Canada's largest privately held automotive parts distributor and the biggest aftermarket distributor in Western Canada. The network now runs to 87 stores across British Columbia and Alberta, along with 19 truck centres, a distribution centre and a fleet of roughly 500 vehicles. It employs more than 2,000 people.
The Alberta side of that is new and growing. Medicine Hat is store number seven in the province, which means most Albertans still have not shopped there and the brand is not yet the default the way it is in B.C. That is the competitive question worth watching in the Hat: whether a B.C. chain can take counter business off established local and national parts sellers.
