If you have a game or practice booked on a Lethbridge sports field this week, it is not happening.
The City of Lethbridge announced Monday that all outdoor community sports fields are closed due to heavy rainfall, effective immediately. The closures run through at least Wednesday, June 3. City staff will reassess conditions on June 4 before deciding whether fields can reopen.
Why fields close after heavy rain
This is not just about mud on your cleats. Playing on waterlogged fields causes real damage turf tears, soil compacts, and drainage systems get overwhelmed when games and practices go ahead on saturated ground. A field that gets used in poor conditions can take weeks to recover and can require expensive repairs before it is safe and playable again.
Lethbridge has been hit with the same rainfall system affecting most of Alberta this week. Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the region with 50 to 100 mm expected through Wednesday morning more than a full month's worth of May precipitation falling in under five days. The Oldman River is under a high streamflow advisory. Ground across southern Alberta is saturated.
Field closures in these conditions are standard practice for municipalities across the province. The City of Lethbridge's field closure policy exists specifically to protect the city's investment in sports infrastructure and ensure fields are in good condition for the rest of the season.
What to do if you have a game scheduled
Contact your league or sport organization directly they will have the most current information on rescheduled games and practices. The City of Lethbridge is updating its field closure page in real time at lethbridge.ca/parks-leisure-recreation/parks-and-playgrounds/#fieldclosures.
Check that page before heading out. Conditions can change quickly as the rainfall system moves through and fields dry out at different rates depending on drainage, sun exposure, and soil type.
The next reassessment is June 4. If conditions improve, some or all fields may reopen that day. If the ground is still saturated, closures will extend further into the week.
