A Split-Second Decision That Made the Difference
What began as an ordinary day quickly turned into a life-or-death situation for two Edmonton residents who are now being recognized for their actions. According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), Prabhakaran and Anantdeep responded immediately after being alerted that someone had collapsed behind their workplace. Without hesitation, they called 911 and rushed to the scene stepping into a critical situation that many would feel unprepared to handle.

Coordinated Response Before Paramedics Arrived
As emergency services were dispatched, both individuals took on crucial roles. One guided paramedics to the exact location, ensuring there was no delay in reaching the patient. At the same time, the other began performing CPR on the unresponsive individual, maintaining steady and effective compressions while waiting for help to arrive. That combination clear direction and immediate medical intervention proved vital in those first few minutes. AHS later confirmed that their actions played a meaningful role in the patient’s successful resuscitation.
Why Bystander CPR Matters
Incidents like this highlight a critical reality: in cardiac emergencies, the first few minutes are often the most important. According to emergency response guidelines, immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. However, many cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals, where survival often depends on whether someone nearby is willing and able to act. In this case, the presence of two individuals who stepped forward without hesitation made a measurable difference.
Recognized for Courage and Compassion
In recognition of their actions, Alberta Health Services presented both individuals with Citizen Awards, honouring their courage, teamwork, and willingness to help a complete stranger. In a statement, AHS noted that their response reflects the powerful role everyday people can play in emergency situations especially when they act quickly and decisively.
A Reminder for the Community
While not everyone will face a situation like this, the outcome serves as a reminder of how valuable basic emergency awareness can be. Knowing how to call for help, guide responders, or perform CPR even at a basic level can turn bystanders into lifesavers. For Prabhakaran and Anantdeep, that knowledge and instinct to act turned an ordinary moment into one that ultimately helped save a life.
