Build a focused psychological practice supporting future healthcare professionals

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FoPPS) is seeking an experienced Registered Psychologist to provide dedicated psychological care to undergraduate and graduate learners navigating the academic, professional and personal demands of healthcare education.

This role is primarily focused on one-to-one counselling and psychological support, giving you the opportunity to build meaningful therapeutic relationships with learners experiencing a range of mental health, academic and personal concerns.

As the primary provider of psychological services within FoPPS, you will have significant professional autonomy in your clinical work while also being connected to psychologists and social workers in the University's Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing. The position offers a focused practice environment where you can become deeply familiar with the needs and pressures experienced by Pharmacy learners.

Your work will primarily support Pharmacy students and graduate learners, with some additional support to medical learners through an established partnership with the Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing.

Provide psychological care

• Provide primarily one-to-one, short-term, evidence-based counselling and psychotherapy to undergraduate and graduate learners.
• Support learners experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, academic and professional stress, relationship concerns, identity development, cultural adjustment and major life transitions.
• Conduct psychological assessment, DSM-5 diagnosis and treatment planning, and coordinate referrals for specialized or longer-term care where appropriate.
• Provide crisis intervention and urgent support, including risk assessment, safety planning and critical incident debriefing.
• Apply trauma-informed, culturally responsive and evidence-based approaches while incorporating each learner's identity, circumstances and lived experience into care.
• Maintain timely and appropriate clinical documentation in accordance with professional, legislative and University requirements.

Work alongside learner-support colleagues

• Collaborate with psychologists and social workers in the Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing where coordination of student care is required.
• Consult with FoPPS faculty and staff as appropriate regarding student mental health supports and referral processes.
• Help learners connect with appropriate campus or community resources when needs extend beyond the scope of the role.

Occasionally contribute to broader wellbeing initiatives

• Deliver occasional group sessions or psychoeducational programming on specific mental health and wellbeing topics.
• Contribute clinical insight to student wellness initiatives, service evaluation or planning as opportunities arise.
   

Required

• Master's degree in Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology or a closely related field that supports registration as a psychologist in Alberta.
• Registration as a Psychologist in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists.
• At least five years of professional counselling or clinical experience working with diverse and complex mental health concerns.
• Experience providing evidence-based psychotherapy, including trauma-informed approaches.
• Experience with crisis intervention, assessment and treatment planning.
• Strong clinical judgement and the ability to work independently within professional and ethical standards.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish trust with learners from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary environment.

Particularly valuable experience

You do not need to bring every one of these experiences. We would be especially interested in hearing from psychologists with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Post-secondary students, healthcare professionals, trainees or other high-performing/high-stress populations.
• Developmental psychology, identity development or cross-cultural counselling.
• Group facilitation, psychoeducation or mental health outreach.
• Supporting neurodivergent learners.
• Program evaluation, applied research or service development.
• Professional programs such as Pharmacy, Medicine or other health disciplines.
• Electronic health records and virtual counselling platforms.
   

The practice environment
 

This position supports approximately 650 undergraduate and graduate learners within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, with additional support to Undergraduate Medical Education learners as needed through an established partnership with the Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing.
 

The majority of your time will be spent providing individual psychological counselling and support directly to learners. As the Faculty's primary psychological care provider, you will have considerable independence in managing your clinical work while having access to professional connection and collaboration with psychologists and social workers in the Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing.
 

Because Pharmacy students balance demanding coursework, experiential education and clinical placements, the position offers the opportunity to develop specialized familiarity with the mental health needs of learners preparing for healthcare careers.
 

Some scheduling flexibility is required, including occasional late-afternoon or evening availability to accommodate students whose classes or clinical placements limit their availability during regular daytime hours.

The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule G of the collective agreement between the University and the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package. This position has a market supplement of $6,458.50 in recognition of the specialized qualifications and scope of practice required. Including this market supplement, this position has a total pro-rated salary of $45,215 to $70,812.50 (pro-rated).
