A broken pipe on private property. That's all it took.
On Friday morning, a water service line failed somewhere in Spruce Cliff. When crews moved to shut the water off to that property, the process knocked pressure out of the watermain feeding the surrounding neighbourhood and Alberta Health Services didn't wait around. By Friday afternoon, AHS had ordered the City of Calgary to issue a Boil Water Advisory covering roughly 500 homes and businesses across Spruce Cliff and limited areas of Wildwood and Rosscarrock.
The advisory is precautionary. There's no confirmed contamination but when a watermain loses pressure, the risk of outside material entering the system is real enough that AHS doesn't take chances.
Water service was expected to be physically restored Friday afternoon. Restored pressure and safe drinking water, though, aren't the same thing.

Three Days, Minimum
Before AHS signs off on the water being safe, crews have to flush the entire affected section of watermain and run water quality tests. That process takes at least three days no exceptions. Residents will see hydrants open and water running into the street. That's the flush. It's required.
Until the advisory lifts, everyone inside the boundary needs to bring all tap water to a full rolling boil for one minute before using it for anything drinking, brushing teeth, making ice, washing raw food. Bottled water works too. Water wagons are being set up at locations posted at calgary.ca/wateroutages.
If you're just outside the advisory boundary, Mayor Jeromy Farkas confirmed on Reddit Friday that residents outside the affected zone have nothing to worry about only the depressurized area carries any risk.
Questions go to 311. Health-related questions go to Health Link at 811.

Ripple Effects
The advisory didn't stop at front doors. Reports from residents indicated businesses at Westbrook Mall were also affected, with several closing Friday as a result of the advisory though the City has not formally confirmed the full commercial impact.
The City is working with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and Alberta Health Services to resolve the situation and lift the advisory as soon as testing clears.
What This Isn't
This was not a break on a City-owned watermain. And it has nothing to do with the Bearspaw South Feeder Main reinforcement work keeping all of Calgary under Stage 4 water restrictions since March 9.
There is one unexpected connection, though. The water conservation Calgarians have kept up since restrictions began shorter showers, full laundry loads, toilets flushed only when needed is what gave crews enough supply in the system to carry out the flushing work without straining an already stretched network. One neighbourhood's problem, solved in part by an entire city pulling in the same direction.
Stage 4 restrictions remain in place citywide through the end of the month.
