Edmonton travellers are getting another way to reach Europe without connecting through Calgary, Toronto or Vancouver.
Discover Airlines, the leisure airline of Germany’s Lufthansa Group, will launch nonstop flights between Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and Frankfurt on June 1, 2027.
The summer route runs three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, until Oct. 30.
It gives Edmonton a second nonstop gateway to Europe, alongside KLM’s Amsterdam flights. Discover says it’ll be the only airline flying nonstop between Germany and Edmonton.
“Welcoming Discover Airlines to Edmonton gives our region a new way to reach the world,” said Myron Keehn, YEG’s president and CEO.
Edmonton to Frankfurt: the schedule
All times are local.
| Flight | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Edmonton → Frankfurt (4Y071) | 4:15 p.m. | 9:05 a.m. next day |
| Frankfurt → Edmonton (4Y070) | 1:05 p.m. | 2:30 p.m. same day |
The eastbound flight is an overnight. You leave Edmonton in the afternoon and land in Frankfurt the next morning, with time to catch a connecting flight that day.
The return leaves Germany after lunch and lands in Edmonton the same afternoon, thanks to the eight-hour time difference.
Tickets went on sale Oct. 20.

How Edmonton compares to Calgary
Calgary has a much larger network of nonstop European flights than Edmonton.
WestJet runs its international hub at YYC, several European airlines fly there, and Discover already serves Calgary. For years, Edmonton travellers looking for more options or cheaper fares have driven three hours south to fly.
Edmonton’s main nonstop to Europe has been KLM’s Amsterdam route, which runs about five to six times a week in summer.
Frankfurt doesn’t close the gap. Calgary still has more European routes and more departure days. But Edmonton now gets two major European hubs instead of one, and a choice between connecting through Amsterdam on KLM or through Frankfurt on the Lufthansa Group.
For anyone heading to Germany, it’s a big change: no connection, no drive to Calgary.

Why Frankfurt matters even if you’re not going to Germany
Frankfurt is one of Europe’s biggest airline hubs and Lufthansa’s main base.
Frankfurt Airport’s winter schedule lists 231 destinations in 92 countries, served by 80 airlines.
That makes trips like Edmonton to Rome, Athens, Barcelona, Zurich or even Mumbai one stop in Frankfurt. Discover and the Lufthansa Group also connect to the Mediterranean, Africa and Asia.
A nonstop to Frankfurt isn’t a nonstop to those cities. You’ll still need to connect, and not every connection will line up well.
The plane
Discover will fly the route on an Airbus A330-300, a wide-body jet with 283 seats:
Business class: 30 seats that fold into lie-flat beds
Premium economy: 28 seats
Economy: 225 seats
Meals are included in all cabins. Economy passengers pay for alcohol.
Check fare rules before booking. Baggage and seat selection can cost extra on cheaper fares.
Can you use Aeroplan points?
Yes.
Discover is a Lufthansa Group airline and an Aeroplan partner. You can book it through Air Canada, and Lufthansa’s Miles & More program works too.
You can earn Aeroplan points on Discover flights, and redeem them for seats, depending on availability and Aeroplan’s program rules.
Fly into Edmonton, fly home from Calgary
Discover isn’t just after Edmonton travellers. It wants European tourists.
The airline is pitching Edmonton and Calgary as a pair. Visitors can fly into one city, road-trip through Jasper and Banff, and fly home from the other.
“This will make Discover Airlines the only carrier to offer nonstop service from Germany to the city, an ideal gateway for exploring the Canadian Rockies,” the airline said.
For Edmonton, the opportunity is getting those visitors to spend time in the city before they head for the mountains. Explore Edmonton says visitors already spend about $2.6 billion a year here.
Edmonton has flown to Frankfurt before
This isn’t Edmonton’s first nonstop to Frankfurt.
German airline Condor launched seasonal Frankfurt–Edmonton flights in May 2023, twice a week. Discover brings the connection back with three flights a week, under a different airline.
Will it make flying to Europe cheaper?
Not necessarily.
Fares depend on demand, dates and competition. A new nonstop doesn’t guarantee lower prices.
The real benefit is convenience. You skip a connection, cut your total travel time and remove the risk of missing a flight in Toronto or Calgary.
The catch is frequency. With three flights a week, you’ll need to travel on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. If you need to leave on a Monday, Calgary or another hub may still work better.
Another new route for YEG
The Frankfurt announcement comes days after Air Canada said it will launch nonstop Edmonton–Newark flights in summer 2027, giving YEG a new link to the New York area.
The challenge is keeping routes like these. Airlines need to see enough Edmonton passengers to keep flying.
“We are delighted to add Edmonton to our route network,” said Rupert Kraus, Discover’s director of network and partnerships.
