Air Canada isn’t flying to Mumbai next year.
The airline has left its Toronto–Mumbai route off the 2027 schedule. Calgary–Delhi is gone too. Both were seasonal routes that ran through London Heathrow, and both are among five long-haul routes Air Canada has quietly dropped.
Air India, meanwhile, just started flying Toronto to Mumbai nonstop.
Air India’s first flight left Pearson on Oct. 25. It runs three times a week, skips London entirely, and gets you there in about 15 hours. Air Canada’s version could take more than 22.

What Air Canada is cutting
These five routes won’t return in 2027:
Toronto–Mumbai, via London Heathrow
Calgary–Delhi, a winter route via London Heathrow
Vancouver–Dubai, with Dubai service consolidated through Toronto
Vancouver–Singapore, ending January 2027
Montreal–Algiers, which had been expected back in June 2027
Air Canada confirmed the five destinations “will not return as planned.” The cuts were first reported in early October.
The airline has only explained one of them. It said Vancouver–Singapore “did not meet the business targets required to remain sustainable.” It hasn’t said publicly why it dropped Mumbai or Calgary–Delhi.

Why the India routes went through London
Air Canada used to fly to Mumbai nonstop. Then Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, and Canada closed its airspace to Russian airlines. Russia closed its airspace to Canadian airlines in return.
Most of the shortest routes from North America to India cross that airspace. Without it, Air Canada’s 787s couldn’t make the trip nonstop with a full load, so the airline added a stop in London. Passengers flew Toronto to Heathrow, then on to Mumbai on the same plane. Calgary–Delhi worked the same way.
That meant a longer trip, more fuel, more crew time and a London stop competing with every airline that already flies London to India. Industry reports point to those economics as the reason the routes didn’t survive. The Mumbai route last flew in March 2026.
Air India doesn’t face the same problem. Indian airlines can still fly over Russia.
Air India’s new nonstop schedule
Air India’s Toronto–Mumbai flight runs Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays through March 26, 2027.
| Flight | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| AI192, Toronto to Mumbai | 12:30 p.m. | 2:10 p.m. next day |
| AI193, Mumbai to Toronto | 4:00 a.m. | 10:00 a.m. same day |
Times are local. In winter, the Toronto to Mumbai flight works out to about 15 hours 10 minutes in the air.
The plane is a Boeing 777-300ER with eight first-class suites, 40 lie-flat business seats and 280 economy seats, plus Wi-Fi. That adds nearly 2,000 seats a week between Canada and India.
“Canada has long been a cornerstone of Air India’s international network and remains one of our largest overseas markets,” said Nipun Aggarwal, Air India’s chief commercial officer.
The route is seasonal. Air India hasn’t said whether it will continue past March.

Air India is growing in Canada while Air Canada pulls back
Mumbai is part of a larger Air India push. This winter it’s running 20 flights a week between India and Canada:
10 a week between Delhi and Toronto, now on newer 787-9s
3 a week between Mumbai and Toronto
7 a week between Delhi and Vancouver
Air India says premium-seat capacity on its Toronto flights is up 71 per cent.
Air Canada isn’t leaving India. It still flies Toronto–Delhi nonstop year-round and Montreal–Delhi seasonally. It’s also adding routes elsewhere, including Toronto to Oslo, Shannon and Nice for summer 2027, plus more Shanghai flights.
The airline is moving planes to markets where the numbers work. Right now, India through London isn’t one of them.
What it means if you’re flying from Alberta
Calgary is the real loss here. Calgary–Delhi was the only Air Canada India service that started in Alberta. Even with the London stop, it let travellers from Calgary and Edmonton fly to India on one airline without going through Toronto first.
For 2027, Albertans flying to India will mostly be connecting. The main options:
Through Toronto: connect to Air Canada’s nonstop to Delhi, or Air India’s nonstops to Delhi or Mumbai.
Through Vancouver: Air India flies Vancouver–Delhi nonstop seven times a week.
Through Europe or the Middle East: on other airlines, depending on dates and price.
Before you book:
Get everything on one ticket if you can. If your Calgary–Toronto flight is late and you miss a separately booked Air India flight, that’s your problem.
Check the layover. A 15-hour nonstop doesn’t help much if you sit at Pearson for eight hours first.
Compare the full trip, not just the long flight.
Check baggage rules. Allowances can change between airlines on the same trip.
Is this permanent?
Not necessarily. All Air Canada has said is that these routes won’t run in 2027. Airlines review routes constantly, and if Russian airspace ever reopens, the math on nonstop India flights changes completely.
For now, Air Canada is out of Mumbai and Calgary has lost its India flight. Air India is the only airline flying nonstop between Toronto and Mumbai.
