Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack has appointed Blake Desjarlais, a former federal NDP MP, as Chief of Staff for the Office of the Mayor, effective April 7, 2026.

Desjarlais represented the Edmonton–Griesbach riding in Parliament, where he focused on public services and advancing Indigenous rights. He has also served as a chief political advisor and National Director of the Métis Settlements General Council. Born in Edmonton, he holds a political science degree from the University of Victoria.
Edmonton’s mayoral race is non-partisan, meaning Knack ran without a party affiliation. The appointment adds a politically experienced voice to the Mayor’s Office as Knack’s new administration takes shape.

What the role involves
As Chief of Staff, Desjarlais will serve as the Mayor’s primary strategic advisor. His responsibilities include helping implement the Mayor’s Office priorities, shaping City of Edmonton policy, leading government relations, and overseeing community engagement.
“Blake’s experience working in local and federal governments is marked by his extraordinary talent for bringing communities together,” said Mayor Knack. “His dedication to Edmontonians and his drive to make a positive difference is inspiring.”
Desjarlais said he welcomes the appointment.
“I am honoured to be able to serve Edmontonians as Chief of Staff for Mayor Knack’s office. I look forward to working alongside Mayor Knack and his team with the vision of building a stronger Edmonton, together.”
Transition details
Interim Chief of Staff Gabrielle Blatz will support Desjarlais through the transition period. Her final day in the office is April 30, after which she will take on a new role as Provincial Women’s Representative of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
