If you drove past the Gas City Campground this morning, you might have noticed something unusual for early April: trailers are already unhooking and campfires are starting to crackle.
In a major shift for local tourism, Medicine Hat has officially moved its camping season up by nearly six weeks. Traditionally, the gates at Gas City didn't swing open until the final Friday of April. This year, the city pulled the trigger on an April 6 opening, and the reason is a mix of changing climate and local demand.
The "Early Bird" Strategy
The decision to open early wasn't just a whim. After several years of dwindling snowpacks and unseasonably warm Marches, the City of Medicine Hat's parks department noticed a trend: residents were ready to get outside long before the official "season" began.
By opening in early April, the city is tapping into the "shoulder season" market travelers heading north from the States and locals itching to test out their new rigs after a long winter.

What’s Different for 2026?
It’s not just the date that’s new. As part of the city’s broader "Go Green" initiative, campers at both Gas City and Echo Dale will notice a few upgrades this season:
Battery Recycling on Site: For the first time, the city is offering dedicated household battery recycling stations at the campgrounds to prevent hazardous waste from hitting the local landfill.
SureGrow Compost: The city is even giving away its high-quality "SureGrow" compost at specific events this month (April 18) for those who want to get their gardens started while they prep their campsites.

A Boost for the Local Economy
Medicine Hat’s "Gas City" branding has always leaned into its status as a reliable pitstop for cross-country travelers. By adding six weeks to the calendar, local businesses from gas stations to downtown restaurants are expecting a ripple effect of early-season spending.
For the campers currently setting up, the early opening means they get the pick of the best spots near the coulees before the May Long Weekend rush hits.
The Catch?
Of course, camping in early April in Alberta is always a gamble. While the sun is out today, the "April showers" in the Hat can quickly turn into a surprise spring dusting of snow. But for those currently enjoying a coffee overlooking the South Saskatchewan River, the risk seems well worth the reward.
