A Greek restaurant on Banff Avenue just outranked restaurants in Paris, Rome and Athens.
Tripadvisor has named the Balkan Mediterranean Restaurant in Banff one of the best restaurants in the world in two categories at its 2026 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best awards.
It ranked fourth in the world for vegan and vegetarian dining and 14th in the world for casual dining.
No other Canadian restaurant made either list.
How it stacks up
Only three restaurants on the planet ranked ahead of the Balkan on the vegan and vegetarian list: Organika and Green Point in Cusco, Peru, and Thes Greek Creative Cuisine in Athens.
On the casual dining list, it sits alongside restaurants from cities like Paris, Rome, Edinburgh and Cancún.
The Best of the Best awards are based on the volume and quality of traveller reviews over a 12-month period, not on critics. Tripadvisor says fewer than one per cent of its roughly eight million listings earn the honour.

"Something pretty special"
The Balkan shared the news on Instagram.
"We've once again been named a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Best of the Best for 2026, placing us among the top one per cent of restaurants in the world," the restaurant wrote.
It thanked everyone "who has joined us for a table full of mezze, souvlaki, saganaki, and baklava, shared a review, or brought someone new through our doors."
"Your support has helped make this little corner of the Mediterranean in Banff something pretty special," it added.
Why a lamb restaurant made the vegetarian top five
The Balkan is famous for its lamb. So how did it land fourth on a vegetarian list?
Greek food is full of meatless staples: spanakopita, dolmades, hummus, tzatziki, Greek salads and saganaki. The restaurant says it also offers vegan, gluten-free and halal options.
Tripadvisor's write-up praised the food, the staff and the atmosphere.
"The grilled meats and fresh salads stand out, and you'll want to leave room for their unique desserts," it said. It also told diners to ask staff for recommendations.

What to order
If it's your first time, start with what the Balkan is known for.
Lamb: The restaurant's best seller for decades. Arni psito, Greek roast lamb, is a favourite with reviewers.
Saganaki: Fried Greek cheese, often flambéed at the table.
Calamari: The Balkan was one of the first places in Banff to serve it.
Souvlaki: Grilled skewers, and the most popular dish in the restaurant's early years.
Mezze: A spread of small plates and dips to share.
Baklava: Layers of phyllo, nuts and honey to finish.

Banff's first Greek restaurant
The Balkan's story starts with two Greek families who came to Banff.
John and Antonia Koukouras immigrated from Greece in 1958. Their relatives, Jason and Joanna Karlos, followed in the early 1970s.
The Koukourases opened the Balkan in 1984. It was Banff's first Greek restaurant.
In 1986, Jason Karlos and partner Tommy Soukas took it over and moved it to its current home on Banff Avenue.
Greek food wasn't an easy sell back then.
"We had to train people to like garlic and calamari," Soukas once said.
To win diners over, the restaurant brought in belly dancers and ouzo. It worked.

The next generation
In 2006, brothers Stavros and Yannis Karlos took over from their parents.
Two years later, they gave the restaurant a major renovation. The recipes and the traditions stayed.
Twenty years into running it, the brothers now have the restaurant ranked among the best in the world.
No. 1 in Banff
On Tripadvisor, the Balkan is the top-ranked restaurant in Banff, out of more than 130.
It holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating from close to 3,900 reviews.
In a mountain town that gets millions of visitors a year and has no shortage of places to eat, that's hard to do.

Plate smashing and Greek Nights
A lot of people come for the food. Plenty come for the show.
The Balkan's Greek Nights feature belly dancing, traditional Greek dancing and plate smashing, the old Greek tradition of breaking plates to celebrate.
They run every Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The entertainment is free with dinner, and all ages are welcome. You order off the regular menu.
For a lot of visitors, it's the night they remember from their Banff trip.
