A 55-year-old Edmonton man has died following an assault in the city’s downtown area, leaving friends, family, and community members in shock.
Police have identified the victim as Arvi Singh Sagoo, who was found unconscious near 109 Street and 100 Avenue around 2:20 a.m. on October 19. Emergency responders treated Sagoo at the scene before transporting him to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Sagoo succumbed to his injuries last Friday, according to a statement from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS).
The EPS Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. Kyle Papin, 40, was initially charged with aggravated assault, but police say additional charges related to Sagoo’s death are pending as the investigation continues. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday at the Edmonton medical examiner’s office.
A Father Remembered
Sagoo is being remembered as a kind father and community-minded individual. A GoFundMe page has been launched to support his family during what organizers describe as an “unimaginable loss.”
“This fundraiser aims to support a very kind and loving father and ensure his two children have the resources and support they need,” organizer Vincent Ram wrote on the campaign page.
“By coming together, we can help lift the financial burden and show this family they are not alone.”
Friends and colleagues have also shared tributes online. One post from High End Entertainment, where Sagoo was well-known, expressed heartbreak:
“The world feels so much darker already. Rest in peace, Arvi.”
A City Reflects
This tragedy adds to a string of violent incidents in Edmonton this fall, renewing conversations about safety and community responsibility in the city’s core. Residents and local groups are calling for more late-night safety measures and support for vulnerable individuals.
As Sagoo’s family prepares for a difficult week ahead, they’re surrounded by growing community support — a reminder that even in moments of loss, Edmonton’s compassion remains strong.
