MacEwan is hiring casual lifeguards. NorQuest is hiring a Dean.
Same sector, same city, and between the two of them plus the University of Alberta and NAIT there are more than 170 open roles in Edmonton right now.
Edmonton's post-secondary institutions are an overlooked source of employment, because many job seekers assume every opening is an academic position. Very few of them are.
University of Alberta — 115 roles
The largest single employer on this list, with postings across Edmonton and Calgary.
Currently open: Lab Assistant. Prospect Research Analyst. Ecological Field Technologist. Foreman, Mechanical Key Maintenance Initiatives. Speech Language Pathologist. VPIIE Partnerships Administrator. There's also a Chair and Associate Professor competition, and an administrative position posted in French.
The openings cover trades supervision, fundraising research, field science, health care and administration, not just teaching and research.
That range makes sense once you think about what a university actually is. The U of A operates its own buildings, power plant infrastructure, food services, IT network, security and research facilities across multiple campuses. It employs electricians, plumbers, groundskeepers, accountants, communications staff and event planners, and it hires all of them through the same competition process it uses for faculty.

MacEwan University — 26 roles, Edmonton only
MacEwan has the most openings that don't require post-secondary credentials.
Recent postings include Peer Academic Support Assistant on a casual basis with the Academic Advising Centre, Lifeguard and Instructor with Sport and Wellness, a Front Desk Associate at the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre, and an Administrative Assistant to the Associate Vice President of Indigenous Initiatives Engagement.
The lifeguard position asks for certification rather than a degree, and MacEwan's Sport and Wellness department runs aquatic programming year-round, which means these come up regularly rather than once.
The front desk role is listed as full-time continuing rather than casual, and may offer greater stability along with benefits if the position is eligible. The duties are reception, word processing and filing.
MacEwan also runs sessional faculty competitions, including for the Perioperative Nursing Certificate, open to Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses.
The university was named one of Alberta's top employers in 2026.

NAIT — 17 roles, Edmonton only
Currently posted includes Project Delivery Coordinator.
NAIT's hiring skews technical and operational, in keeping with a polytechnic. Its programs run across trades, engineering technology, business, health and IT, and its instructor competitions frequently look for people who came out of those fields.
If you hold a journeyperson ticket or a technologist designation and have wondered what else it's good for, NAIT is the institution most likely to be interested. Its main campus sits at Princess Elizabeth Avenue, on the LRT line, which is worth factoring in if you're comparing commutes.
NorQuest College — 15 roles, Edmonton only
NorQuest's postings span the widest range of the four, from term instruction to executive leadership.
The instructor competitions include Health Information Instructor, Dental Office Assistant Instructor and Practical Nurse Instructor for Internationally Educated Nurses. The senior roles include a Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and a Manager of Institutional Analytics and Insights.
There's also a Graphic Designer in Strategic Communications, an Accountant II in Financial Services, and academic operations and enrollment coordination positions.
NorQuest's downtown campus is at 108 Street and 102 Avenue, and the college offers flexible work arrangements balancing remote work against campus presence.

The instructor roles are a real career pivot
Worth understanding if you've spent years in a trade or in health care.
Some college and polytechnic instructor positions prioritize recent industry experience and professional credentials, although teaching experience may still be required or preferred. Read each posting carefully, because the balance varies by institution and program.
What this means practically: a working dental assistant, a licensed practical nurse or a journeyperson electrician may already meet the core qualifications for an instructor competition in their own field. Many of these programs are staffed by people who came out of the industry rather than out of graduate school.
Term and sessional instruction is also how most people test whether they want it. Teaching one course while keeping your existing job is a lower-risk way to find out than resigning first.
Term and casual roles are often the entry point
Post-secondary institutions hire heavily on term contracts, cover-off positions and casual work, and those postings tend to draw fewer applicants than permanent ones.
They can also lead somewhere. NorQuest notes in its postings that a competition may be used to fill future vacancies across the college at the same or lower classification level, which means a single application may be considered for roles that haven't been posted yet.
If you see language like that in a posting, it's worth applying even when the specific position isn't ideal.

The application process works differently
Unlike many private-sector employers, post-secondary institutions typically use formal competitions with closing dates. Applying early may not provide the same advantage it would when an employer reviews applications on a rolling basis.
Each posting carries a competition number and a closing time, usually 11:59 p.m. on a set date.
What tends to matter more is how thoroughly you address the posted qualifications, since these applications are generally assessed against stated criteria.
Reference the competition number in your application. Address each listed qualification specifically, using the posting's own terminology rather than your preferred synonyms. Expect reference checks, a criminal record check and academic verification as part of the process.
If you're applying to more than one competition at the same institution, keep track of the numbers. Recruiters handle several at once and referencing the wrong one creates confusion that isn't in your favour.
If your credentials are from outside Canada
NorQuest recommends that applicants who completed post-secondary studies outside Canada obtain an assessment from a recognized Canadian credential evaluator and include the certificate with their application.
The provincial option is the International Qualifications Assessment Service, through alberta.ca. There's a fee and it takes time, so it's worth starting before you find a posting you want.
An assessment can potentially support multiple applications, although applicants should check the requirements of each institution and position, since some accept different evaluators or ask for additional documentation.
Why these roles are worth the effort
Many post-secondary positions are covered by collective agreements, although this varies by institution and position. Where they are, the pay band typically appears in the posting rather than coming up after an offer.
Pension and benefits eligibility depends on the position and its classification, so read the posting rather than assuming.
The campuses themselves are an underrated factor. The U of A, MacEwan, NAIT and NorQuest are all on or near LRT, which is unusual for major Edmonton employers and matters more than people account for when comparing offers in January.
Where to find them
All 170-plus roles are on our job board at culturealberta.com/jobs, alongside 500 openings across Alberta from 42 employers.
Filter by city, category, job type, union status and how recently a posting went up. There's a filter for postings that list pay, which is worth using first, since most employers don't publish a number.
Free to browse. No account, no sign-up wall. You apply on the institution's own site, so nothing routes through us.
It's also worth checking each institution's careers page directly, since post-secondary postings often appear there before they syndicate anywhere else.
