The Charges
A 47-year-old Edmonton man has been charged with 26 Criminal Code offences and two counts under Alberta’s Animal Protection Act following a lengthy investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams. Jonathan Allard was arrested on March 26, 2026 with assistance from the Edmonton Police Service. Investigators allege Allard was involved in human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of at least five women in the Edmonton area.

How the Investigation Unfolded
According to ALERT, the investigation began in June 2025 after a woman contacted police and reported she was being forced into prostitution. Staff Sgt. Chris Hayes, who leads ALERT’s human trafficking and counter-exploitation unit, said the case started when the victim responded to a social media post advertising a room for rent in Edmonton. Police allege the accused arranged to pick the woman up from Red Deer and bring her to Edmonton, where the exploitation began. A Facebook post from September 2025, believed to be linked to the accused, advertised a room for rent in a townhouse near Southgate Centre for approximately $700 per month.

What Investigators Allege
Police say the accused used social media and online platforms to recruit women before forcing them into the sex trade. Investigators allege he controlled the victims, arranged sexual services, communicated with clients, and collected money. ALERT has identified five victims but believes there may be additional survivors who have not yet come forward or agreed to speak with investigators. “We know there are at least five other victims. We would like to speak to them and anyone else who has been exploited,” said Staff Sgt. Hayes. “These are extreme circumstances with life-altering impact and trauma.”

Additional Allegations
In addition to the trafficking-related offences, investigators say the case includes allegations of animal abuse, with evidence that a dog was sexually and physically harmed. The charges against Allard include trafficking in persons, material benefit from trafficking, forcible confinement, assault, procuring and advertising sexual services, bestiality, and multiple animal cruelty-related offences.

What Comes Next
Allard remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on April 16, 2026. Investigators say the case remains ongoing as they work to identify additional victims. Victims connected to the investigation have been provided support through ALERT’s Safety Network Coordinators, and survivors of human trafficking can access help through 211.
