A 59-year-old man is dead after an Edmonton Police officer shot him during a confrontation at a southwest Edmonton residence just before midnight on Friday.
At 11:58 p.m. on June 26, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services called Edmonton Police for assistance after one of their trucks was struck by a vehicle. The male driver allegedly attempted to assault EFRS personnel with a blunt object before fleeing the scene.
Police then received two separate hit-and-run reports in southwest Edmonton involving a vehicle matching the same description. In both cases the male driver allegedly assaulted the other drivers with a blunt object before fleeing. One driver sustained minor injuries.
Officers located a vehicle matching the description from all three incidents in an open garage at a residence on Christie Vista SW. The vehicle had visible recent collision damage.
Officers contained the residence and attempted to make contact with the occupant. A confrontation occurred. EPS confirmed the man was armed with edged weapons. One officer discharged a firearm.
Officers immediately attempted life-saving measures. The 59-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. No EPS officers or other emergency personnel were injured.

What happened across those three incidents
The sequence matters. In roughly the span of an hour, the same vehicle was involved in a collision with an emergency vehicle, two separate hit-and-runs, and three alleged blunt object assaults on firefighters and then on two other drivers before officers traced it to Christie Vista SW.
EPS has not released information about what happened before the initial collision with the fire truck or what may have prompted the events of that night. That will be part of what ASIRT examines.
What ASIRT will investigate
ASIRT is the independent provincial body that investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death. Its involvement is standard procedure and does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing.
EPS submitted a 43.2 notification to the CEO of the Police Review Commission, who directed ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation. EPS has confirmed it will not be providing additional information while that investigation is underway. All media inquiries have been directed to ASIRT.
Investigators will review body-worn camera footage, physical evidence from the scene, and the full sequence of events that preceded the confrontation. The central question is whether the use of force was justified given what the officer was facing at that moment.

This follows another officer-involved shooting in Alberta this week
The Christie Vista shooting is the second fatal officer-involved shooting in Alberta in three days. On June 25, RCMP were involved in a separate fatal officer-involved shooting in Cold Lake. ASIRT was also directed to investigate that incident.
Between December 2025 and March 2026, ASIRT opened 20 Level 1 investigations the most serious category, covering death, serious injury, or serious and sensitive allegations. The Police Review Commission has noted that future public reporting will include more refined categorization of those investigations by incident type.
What comes next
The man has not been publicly identified. EPS will not be releasing further information. ASIRT is now the lead investigative body and no timeline has been given for the conclusion of the investigation.
