A Calgary police officer was shot during a traffic stop in the southwest community of Spruce Cliff at approximately 11:45 a.m. Monday.
The officer was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.
The man who police say fired the shots was later found dead in the Bow River.
What police say happened
Officers were conducting a traffic stop when an occupant of the vehicle fired shots and struck one of them.
The man then fled the vehicle on foot into Edworthy Park and toward the river. Police say it is believed he continued to actively shoot at pursuing officers and nearby civilians as he ran.
Police say it is believed he then carjacked an individual and drove through the park until the vehicle became stuck, at which point he abandoned it and continued on foot.
HAWCS, the Calgary Police Service helicopter, tracked his movements from the air and directed officers on the ground.
He was located deceased in the river before officers on the ground reached him. The Calgary Fire Department is assisting with the recovery.
Police have described it as a dynamic incident and say new information is still coming forward.
The dangerous person alert
Police issued a dangerous person alert around noon while the man was still outstanding in the park. It was lifted in an update at roughly 12:45 p.m., with police saying the threat had ended.
That window is why parts of west Calgary saw an emergency notification on their phones and why the park filled with emergency vehicles before any explanation was public.
What's closed
Several entrances to Edworthy Park remain closed and police are asking the public to stay away from the area while officers search for evidence.
Road closures are in place on Bow Trail S.W. and Sarcee Trail S.W. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Police are asking any witnesses to make contact with officers on scene or to call the non-emergency line.
If you were in Edworthy Park, on the pathways along the Bow, or driving Bow Trail or Sarcee Trail between about 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., investigators want to hear from you. That includes dash cam and phone video, and it includes footage you think shows nothing. A search covering a park this size relies on establishing where people and vehicles were.

What ASIRT is and what happens now
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has taken over the investigation. That is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting in the province.
ASIRT is the civilian oversight body that investigates incidents involving police officers, on or off duty, that result in serious injury or death, as well as allegations of serious or sensitive police misconduct. It operates independently of the police services it investigates and reports to a civilian executive director.
Its investigations are not quick. ASIRT charged a Calgary officer last summer following a two-year investigation into a 2023 shooting, and that case had its preliminary inquiry Monday. Files that conclude no charges are warranted are typically released as public reports months after the incident.
ASIRT is currently investigating a separate Calgary police shooting from July 30 in Bridlewood.
What has not been released
Police have not released the officer's name, rank or the nature of the injury beyond stable condition. They have not released the man's name or age, what the traffic stop was for, how many shots were fired, whether any officer discharged a weapon, or a cause of death.
Whether the person who was carjacked was injured has not been stated. Police say no other injuries have been reported.
Those details now sit with ASIRT rather than with Calgary police.
