Southwest Calgary is getting a new place to buy groceries, and it’s a big one.
A Real Canadian Superstore opens Thursday, Nov. 26, at Buffalo Run on Tsuut’ina Nation, right at Calgary’s southwest edge. Loblaw confirmed the date Thursday. The grand opening ceremony starts at 7 a.m., and everyone is welcome.
It’s a full-size Superstore, roughly 100,000 square feet. And it’s the first Superstore in Alberta designed in close consultation with an Indigenous community.
What’s inside
Loblaw says the store will have:
Fresh produce
A full-service meat counter
A full-service seafood counter
A full-service bakery
Groceries and household essentials
Home, entertainment, beauty and toy departments
Loblaw hasn’t published regular hours yet, and it hasn’t said whether the store will have a pharmacy, a gas bar or Joe Fresh clothing. The 7 a.m. time is for the opening-day ceremony. More details about the celebration are coming closer to the date.
“We can’t wait to open our doors and welcome the community to this new Superstore,” said Jonathan Carroll, Loblaw’s senior vice-president for Real Canadian Superstore.
Designed with Tsuut’ina Nation
During the design, Loblaw worked with the Tsuut’ina-Taza Cultural Advisory Working Group on how the building should reflect the community.
Four Tsuut’ina artists created original pieces for the store:
Aaron Angus Rattlesnake
Maria One Spot
Irene Crowchild
Brianna Rowan-Meguinis
Curator Stephanie One Spot worked with them. The artwork will be unveiled on opening day.
“Real Canadian Superstore took the time to listen,” said James Robertson, president of Taza Development Corp.
Where it is, and what’s already there
Buffalo Run sits along Tsuut’ina Trail, the southwest Calgary ring road, which makes it an easy drive from communities across the city’s southwest.
Shoppers already know the area. The Costco at Buffalo Run opened in August 2020 as the first Costco on First Nation land in Canada. It’s 151,000 square feet, with a gas bar, a tire centre and 847 parking spots, and it opened with 88 full-time jobs.
The Superstore adds a full-service grocer to the same development. Between the two, Buffalo Run will have a warehouse club and a conventional supermarket within a short drive of each other.
Taza is bigger than most people realize
Buffalo Run is one of three villages in Taza, a 1,200-acre development on Tsuut’ina land. The others are Taza Park and The Crossing, all connected by Tsuut’ina Trail.
Taza is a 50/50 partnership between Tsuut’ina Nation, which has about 2,400 members, and Canderel, a Canadian real estate company. It’s planned as a 25-year build. Buffalo Run alone is set to include about 390 acres of retail, dining and recreation.
The next big tenant is already lined up. A Walmart Supercentre is planned for Taza Park West, with an opening targeted for fall 2027. Nation leadership has called it a “huge amenity” for the reserve.
When it opens, Tsuut’ina land will have Costco, Superstore and Walmart, all within a few minutes of each other on the ring road.
Jobs
Loblaw hasn’t said how many people the store will employ. The company held a hiring event on Aug. 26, and the release says the store will bring employment opportunities for Tsuut’ina members, Taza residents and nearby communities.
The store manager is Beverley Sousa, who has been with Real Canadian Superstore for 24 years. She started as a cashier and became a store manager in 2020.
Anyone looking for work there can check Loblaw’s careers site and search for Buffalo Run or Real Canadian Superstore in Calgary.
