Felice Café was busy.
It was growing year over year.
And on Oct. 1, it closed.
After more than four years at Edmonton's Stadium Yards, owners Michelle and Tim Brouwer have shut down the coffee shop they built around local music, small businesses and community events.
To customers, it may not have looked like a business about to close.
"Outwardly, we looked very successful," Michelle Brouwer wrote in the café's farewell post. "The Café was busy, our community was strong, and we were growing year over year."
Behind the scenes, things looked different.
"What you didn't see behind the scenes was the incredible amount of financial strain, emotional stress, and physical burden running a hospitality business takes."
No single reason
The Brouwers didn't point to one cause.
"We can't blame any one factor for our situation," Michelle wrote. "We simply could no longer sustain what Felice needed from us and were forced into this reality."
How Felice started
Felice opened on April 25, 2022, at 10930 84 Street NW, on the ground floor of Stadium Yards near Commonwealth Stadium and the Stadium LRT station.
The name is the musical term for "happy." Michelle, who had worked in health care and never owned a business before, came up with the idea during the pandemic, built around her two loves: live music and supporting local.
When it opened, Felice had about 3,100 square feet, 35 seats inside, and plans for two patios. It sold food and goods from about 20 local companies under their own names, and offered a loft upstairs where vendors could meet, network and hold classes, Taproot Edmonton reported at the time.
"Felice was born out of a love of supporting local," the owners wrote in their farewell. "Coming out of COVID it felt like a calling for us."
'We sell vibes, not coffee'
Over four years, Felice became much more than a place to buy coffee.
Local singer-songwriters played on weekend evenings. Students from nearby colleges and universities studied at its tables. The Brouwers say they worked with hundreds of small businesses through markets and pop-ups, and watched many of their vendors and suppliers grow.
"First Concerts. Weddings. Markets. This place became so much for so many people."
They admitted they didn't know much about the café business when they started.
"We were lucky enough to find amazing baristas who helped us establish who we are, while the people who visited us made Felice what it was," they wrote.
"We sell vibes, not coffee."

'We fought as long as we could'
The hardest part, Michelle wrote, was the staff.
"Our staff, we love you. One of the biggest complaints I hear among small business owners is staffing. This was honestly never a problem at Felice."
"We fought as long as we could until our backs were against the wall because we wanted to do right by them, but it wasn't enough. We are so sorry."

Not the only Edmonton closure this year
Felice's closure comes during a hard year for parts of Edmonton's restaurant and café scene.
Eight restaurants and cafés in or around downtown closed in June and July alone, according to CityNews, including Khazana, kb&co, PlayWright, Greta and Wilfred's. By late July, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce said nearly 20 businesses had closed in the downtown core in 2026.
The reasons varied. Some owners pointed to construction and lost access. Others cited rising costs and the pressure on independent businesses.
Felice sits outside the downtown core, and the Brouwers haven't blamed any of those factors. Their explanation is simpler and broader: even with a full room and growing sales, the business was taking more than they had left to give.
What's next
"Time to heal," Michelle wrote. "We know we want a simpler life and will be building towards it."
"We truly do not regret these years and will think of them often."
Share your memories
The Brouwers are asking customers to send stories and photos from their time at Felice.
"We would love to see the memories of all the good things we didn't see," they wrote. You can email them at tim@felicecafe.ca.
They signed off with one last request: "Please be good to one another and remember to eat, drink, shop, listen local."
