A major fire is burning at and around Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in east-central Alberta after what the prime minister called a “serious incident” at the base Saturday evening.
The Municipal District of Wainwright says high winds are pushing the fire fast into the surrounding area. Premier Danielle Smith says the fire is affecting “many of our brave military personnel.” Ambulances are on scene treating and transporting patients.
As of 7:55 p.m., no official source had confirmed the cause, the number of people hurt, or whether anyone has died.

What officials have said
The first public word came from the MD of Wainwright, the rural municipality that surrounds the base. In a social media post, the MD said an incident near the base had resulted in a large fire, and that high winds were spreading it quickly into the area. Emergency responders were working to “protect people, property and critical infrastructure.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney posted
“A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta,” he wrote. “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected. We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. Premier Smith and I are in close contact.”

Smith posted minutes later.
“We are learning of a significant and tragic fire at CFB Wainwright today that is affecting many of our brave military personnel,” she wrote. “Alberta’s government is in close contact with the Government of Canada and Prime Minister Mark Carney as this situation evolves. Thank you to the first responders and all those providing care and support to those affected.”
Acute Care Alberta, the provincial agency that oversees hospitals and ambulances, confirmed in a media release that Emergency Health Services crews were on scene providing care and transport. It did not say how many patients were involved or where they were being taken.
The Department of National Defence told CTV News it was closely monitoring the situation and could not confirm further details. Base media relations had not issued a statement as of 7:55 p.m. The RCMP had not commented.

Is Wainwright under an evacuation order?
No evacuation order had been issued for Wainwright or the MD of Wainwright as of 7:55 p.m. Saturday, based on the official channels available: Alberta Emergency Alert, the Town of Wainwright and the MD of Wainwright.
That can change in minutes. If you are in the Wainwright area:
Watch the MD of Wainwright and Town of Wainwright social media pages and Alberta Emergency Alert for instructions.
Stay off roads near the base unless you need to be there, and pull over for emergency vehicles.
Keep your phone charged. Emergency alerts come through even on silent.
If you smell smoke indoors, close windows and shut off air intakes.
The Town of Wainwright, population about 6,600, sits immediately north of the base gate. The base’s own residential community, where serving members and their families live, is on the base itself.
What remains unconfirmed
Social media is well ahead of the facts. Posts on X are claiming mass casualties, explosions and medevac helicopters. None of that has been confirmed by the military, the province, the municipality or police. We are not reporting any of it as fact.
Here is what no official source has said:
What the incident was
Whether anyone has died
How many people are injured, and how badly
Whether there was an explosion
Whether the fire has crossed from the base into private land
Whether any roads or highways are closed
High winds across central Alberta
Strong winds swept across central Alberta on Saturday, and the MD of Wainwright says those winds are what is driving the fire’s spread.
Environment Canada issued a wind warning for the Edmonton region just after 1 p.m. with gusts forecast up to 100 km/h. Edmonton International Airport recorded a 98 km/h gust at 2 p.m. A line of thunderstorms and showers was moving east along the Yellowhead corridor through the afternoon. Wainwright lies east-southeast of Edmonton on that general track. Environment Canada has not published a recorded gust speed for Wainwright, so the exact wind at the base is not known.
The wind was causing damage well before the fire. Fortis Alberta crews were chasing power outages across the Edmonton area for the second time in a week. Elections Alberta extended voting hours at some polls because of the wind and said power outages had shut down advance voting at two rural locations.
Referendum advance voting shut down in Wainwright
The fire hit on the final day of advance voting for Monday’s provincial referendum.
Elections Alberta said it was informed of the fire and closed the Wainwright Communiplex advance vote location. Ballot boxes and materials from Wainwright are being moved securely.
Voters in Electoral Division 86 who still want to vote early were directed to the two remaining advance locations: the Border Inn in Lloydminster and the Vermilion Elks Hall. Both are more than an hour’s drive from Wainwright. Advance polls close at 8 p.m.
Regular voting is Monday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Elections Alberta has not said whether Wainwright’s voting day locations will be affected. If the Communiplex or other town facilities are needed for emergency operations, voters should watch for a change-of-location notice.
About CFB Wainwright
CFB Wainwright is one of the busiest army bases in Canada. It sits about 210 kilometres east of Edmonton and 110 kilometres southwest of Lloydminster, directly south of the Town of Wainwright.
The base is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, where Canadian Army brigades run their largest live exercises each year, and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. It is the main training ground for the army units based at Edmonton Garrison, which means Edmonton soldiers rotate through Wainwright constantly. Around 700 military members and 300 civilians work there full time, and the population routinely tops 1,000 during exercises.
The training area covers roughly 600 square kilometres, about the size of the City of Edmonton. The land was once Buffalo National Park. Ottawa took it over in 1940 for an army camp, it held German prisoners of war at the end of the Second World War, and the base still keeps a herd of about 50 bison on the old park land.
What to watch for next
The Canadian Armed Forces or the Department of National Defence will likely issue a formal statement. In past serious incidents at Wainwright, the military has confirmed basic facts within hours and withheld names until families are notified.
The RCMP, the MD of Wainwright and Alberta Emergency Alert are the sources to watch for evacuation and road information. Acute Care Alberta may release patient numbers. Elections Alberta will say whether Monday’s voting locations in Wainwright change.
