The Alberta Energy Rebate portal opened July 1 and drew 106,000 applications in its first 24 hours, but many Albertans quickly ran into verification problems.
Two separate issues hit on launch day. One is fixed. One is still catching people.

What went wrong
The first problem was a sign-in issue affecting Alberta.ca accounts caused by the volume of traffic. Jonathan Gauthier, press secretary for the Ministry of Technology and Innovation, confirmed that issue has been fixed.
The second problem is still affecting applicants. The portal sets up direct deposit through Interac's Verification Service but not all Canadian banks participate. ATB Financial is not on the supported list. Neither are several credit unions and smaller institutions. If your bank is not listed, the verification step will not complete and the application stalls.
"We recognize this step has been a source of frustration for some applicants," Gauthier said. The province confirmed it is looking at ways to improve the process.
Why so many Albertans hit the same wall
ATB Financial is the largest Alberta-based bank with roughly 700,000 personal banking customers. Its absence from the supported list means a significant number of Albertans hit a dead end on day one through no fault of their own.
The portal was built around Interac's Verification Service, which requires individual banks to opt in. ATB not being on the list is not a portal error — it reflects ATB not currently offering this particular service to its customers. Whether ATB is added before the September 30 deadline has not been confirmed by either the province or ATB.
The banks currently supported are BMO, CIBC, Desjardins, First West Envision Financial, First West Valley First, First West Island Savings, National Bank, Libro, Prospera, RBC, Scotiabank, and TD Canada Trust. If your bank is not on that list, use document verification instead.
If the portal did not work for you
Three options:
Use document verification. When you reach the bank verification step, select document verification instead of Interac. It requires uploading a photo ID and a selfie rather than your banking login and works regardless of which bank you use. This is the fix for most people who hit the Interac wall.
Try after midnight. The portal was under heavy traffic throughout July 1 and into July 2. Multiple applicants reported the process worked smoothly late at night. If the site felt slow or unresponsive, try again after midnight.
Call for help. Contact the Alberta Energy Rebate call centre at 780-401-4014 or toll-free at 1-844-401-4014, open Monday to Friday 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can also email AlbertaEnergyRebate@gov.ab.ca.

What happens once you submit
Once submitted your application cannot be changed. The portal confirms your submission and gives you a specific payment date. Applications submitted July 2 show a payment date of Friday, July 17, 2026. You will also receive a confirmation email with your application code keep it so you can check your status at energyrebate.alberta.ca at any time.

A note on applying as a couple
If you and your partner are both applying, try to do it at the same time or in quick succession. Some applicants reported receiving a short window for their spouse to complete their application before the first one was flagged. Applying together avoids that problem.
Why $100 instead of cheaper gas
The rebate replaces the Fuel Tax Relief Program that was scheduled to take effect July 1. The province chose a direct payment over a fuel tax cut because tax reductions do not guarantee savings reach consumers retailers can absorb the cut rather than passing it on at the pump.
The province calculates the rebate delivers 50 percent more savings per person than the average Albertan would have saved on fuel taxes over three months. The 13-cent-per-litre provincial fuel tax continues unchanged. The rebate does not show up at the pump it arrives as an e-transfer to your bank account within 14 days of applying.
You have until September 30
The portal stays open until September 30, 2026. If you ran into problems on launch day, you are not at risk of missing the deadline. Apply at energyrebate.alberta.ca.
