Parkland RCMP received a call on the morning of May 28 reporting a fuel theft and mischief at a site near Highway 16A in Acheson.
The suspects were already gone. What they left behind told most of the story.
Between 7:30 p.m. on May 27 and 5:30 a.m. on May 28, suspects drove a dually truck onto the property. They climbed into an excavator already sitting on site and used it to tear open a trailer containing equipment. The photo RCMP posted to social media on June 1 shows the result a trailer ripped open, debris scattered across the yard, and a site that looks like something drove through it. Because something did.
Approximately $20,000 in diesel fuel was stolen. Damage to the property on site is estimated at more than $5,000. Total losses exceed $25,000.

Why they used an excavator
This is not a smash-and-grab. Using a piece of heavy equipment already on a job site to force entry into a locked trailer is deliberate. It bypasses locks, hinges, and security hardware entirely. An excavator bucket can tear through the side of a steel trailer in seconds. No cutting tools required. No time wasted.
It also signals familiarity with industrial sites. Whoever did this knew how to operate an excavator, knew the site had one, and knew what was inside the trailer worth taking.
What Acheson is and why it gets targeted
Acheson is an industrial hamlet in Parkland County immediately west of Edmonton off Highway 16A. It is one of the largest industrial areas in western Canada hundreds of companies operate there including oilfield service companies, heavy equipment dealers, trucking firms, and construction contractors.
Sites like the one targeted are common across the area: outdoor yards holding heavy equipment, fuel tanks, trailers, and tools, often without full-time overnight security. Diesel fuel is a high-value, easily resold commodity. At current Alberta prices, $20,000 in diesel represents roughly 10,000 to 12,000 litres the kind of volume that requires a large tank or multiple transfers to move. A dually truck fitted with a slip tank in the bed is the standard setup for this type of theft.
Acheson has seen elevated criminal activity throughout 2026. In early February, Parkland County Enforcement Services became aware of increased criminal activity in Acheson Zone 1 and responded with 33 high-visibility patrols over 26 days to deter and detect criminal activity. The May 27 incident suggests the area remains a target.
