A 140,000-square-foot Walmart is going up just outside southwest Calgary.
That's about eight NHL ice surfaces of floor space, and it will hold a full grocery store alongside everything else Walmart sells.
Walmart Canada has broken ground on the new Supercentre at Taza Park West, on Tsuut'ina Nation. It's expected to open in fall 2027.
The ceremony was held September 24 and led by Elder Charlie Crowchild and Traditional Helper Dave Meguinis, who welcomed Walmart to Taza.
Walmart was first announced in 2025 as the first major anchor tenant at Taza Park West. The new Supercentre will be Taza Park's primary grocery and general merchandise retailer.
What's being built
The store's size comes from Ed Wirun, a market manager with Walmart Canada.
It will combine groceries, including produce, a bakery and a deli, with Walmart's full range of general merchandise.
"This has been a couple years in the working so far, and we're really excited, because in the fall of 2027 we should be able to open up the doors to the customers," Wirun said after the ceremony.
"Competition is a good thing for everybody, and we look forward to serving the community."
Where it is
The Walmart is at Taza Park West, on Tsuut'ina Nation directly west of Calgary.
It's on the south side of Glenmore Trail, across from the Westhills shopping centre, close to southwest Calgary neighbourhoods and the Ring Road.
When hiring starts
Recruitment is expected to begin in early spring 2027, ahead of the fall opening.
Wirun told the Calgary Herald the store is expected to employ roughly 100 people once open.
Taza says the Walmart project will create employment opportunities for Tsuut'ina Nation members and neighbouring communities, during construction and once the store opens.
Walmart is arriving as Taza Park fills with residents
Taza Park is a 470-acre mixed-use community planned for more than 6,500 homes, about 12,000 residents and more than one million square feet of commercial space at full build-out.
The first residents have already moved in, and Brookfield Residential, Crystal Creek Homes and Homes by Avi are building there now.
That puts a full grocery store inside the same community where thousands of homes are planned.
Taza is much bigger than one store
The Walmart sits inside one of the largest First Nation developments in North America.
Taza covers about 1,200 acres of Tsuut'ina land, split into three villages: Taza Park, Buffalo Run and The Crossing. They're connected by Tsuut'ina Trail, the stretch of the Ring Road that runs through the Nation.
It's run by Taza Development Corporation, a 50-50 partnership between Tsuut'ina Nation and Montreal-based developer Canderel. Taza Development president James Robertson has described the full plan as a 20-year, $10-billion vision.
You may have already been to Taza
If you've shopped at the Costco at Buffalo Run, you have.
Costco opened there in 2020 and became one of Taza's best-known early retailers.
More grocery competition is on the way. A Real Canadian Superstore at Buffalo Run is scheduled to open this fall, while Walmart is being built in a different part of the development at Taza Park West.
Taza has said more retail announcements are coming.
Shopping on Tsuut'ina Nation: what to know about GST
There's one difference between shopping at Taza and shopping inside Calgary, and it applies to some customers.
Under federal rules, registered First Nations people can be relieved of GST on goods bought on a reserve. Taza sits on Tsuut'ina Nation reserve land, so that applies at stores there.
To get the exemption, shoppers generally need to show their Certificate of Indian Status at the till.
For everyone else, nothing changes. The usual 5 per cent GST applies, and Alberta has no provincial sales tax either way.
The Canada Revenue Agency has details on how the exemption works, including which purchases qualify.
Part of Walmart's $6.5-billion expansion
The Taza store is part of Walmart Canada's $6.5-billion, five-year investment in new stores and its supply chain across the country.
Walmart has several new Alberta Supercentres in the pipeline, including locations on Tsuut'ina Nation, in Fort McMurray and in southwest Edmonton.
What happens next
Construction is now underway, with hiring expected to begin in spring 2027 ahead of the planned fall 2027 opening.
By then, Taza Park will have something its growing residential community doesn't have today: a major grocery and general merchandise store of its own.
