The City of Red Deer has 19 jobs open, and eight of them are policing roles that don't require a badge.
Red Deer contracts the RCMP for municipal police services, but the City hires the civilian staff who work inside the detachment. That's a route into police work most people don't know exists.

The police jobs
Police Watch Operator, two postings. This provides administrative and operational support on a 24/7 basis to RCMP members and Municipal Enforcement, maintaining police databases and communication devices in a fast-paced environment. It requires three years of direct experience in a police environment, though three years in a legal environment may be considered equivalent.
Police Communications Operator, casual. The first point of contact for non-emergency and administrative calls into the RCMP detachment, from the public, Municipal Enforcement Officers and third-party clients. It involves triaging requests for service and working in CIIDS, CPIC and PROS, using Ten Codes and the phonetic alphabet.
Police Criminal Intelligence Analyst.
Reviewer / Analyst, Police.

What these jobs actually require
Worth knowing before you apply, because the barriers aren't where people expect them.
You need to pass an RCMP security clearance before you receive an offer, and maintain it throughout employment. That's a more thorough process than a standard criminal record check.
There's tested training after you're hired. Police Watch Operators must satisfactorily complete the RCMP PROS User Course, the CPIC Maintenance Course, the Records Information Manager Course and the National Call Taking Course.
The hours are real. Police Communications Operator shifts run Monday through Sunday between 6:45 a.m. and 10 p.m., including statutory holidays. Watch Operator support is 24/7.
What you don't need is police training, a criminal justice degree, or the physical testing that comes with becoming an officer.
The trades and operations roles
Maintenance Planner — $43.03 to $45.29 an hour, CUPE Local 417, regular full-time, 80 hours biweekly.
This one is at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, planning and scheduling maintenance work before it gets executed. It wants Grade 12 plus a journeyperson certificate in a recognized four-year industrial trade, specifically millwright, electrician, instrumentation and control technician, or plumbing, and five years in an industrial maintenance environment.
Equivalent combinations of education and directly related experience may be considered, which is worth reading if you're close but not exact.

One hiring rule worth knowing
The Maintenance Planner posting includes a line most municipalities haven't put in writing yet.
"The City of Red Deer does not permit the use of unauthorized internet resources or Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, for example, Copilot, ChatGPT or any other form of AI, during interviews or any supervised or timed assessments. Any violation may be investigated and result in serious consequences, including the rejection of your application."
That covers live interviews and timed tests, not preparation. But it's explicit, and it's enforced.
Who you'd be working for
The City of Red Deer runs a $480-million operating budget and a $60-million capital program, with a workforce of nearly 1,700 employees.
The city has more than 100,000 residents and a regional reach of over 300,000, sitting on the QEII corridor between Calgary and Edmonton.

What to know before applying
Most City roles are unionized, which is why pay bands appear in postings. The Maintenance Planner falls under CUPE Local 417.
Answer every listed qualification in writing. Municipal postings score applications against stated requirements, and failing to address one is the most common reason a strong candidate gets cut before anyone reads the resume.
Expect background checks, and expect them to be thorough on anything police-adjacent.
Timing matters. Nine of these 19 postings went up between August 25 and September 1, which means the applicant pool is still forming.
The City notes it contacts only those selected for an interview.
