The Grande Prairie Police Service is continuing to hire as it prepares to assume full policing jurisdiction from the RCMP on October 21, 2026 two years ahead of the original schedule. Seventy officers are currently in place. Five positions are posted across the service, with most application deadlines falling before the end of May.

The GPPS was established in March 2023, the first new municipal police service in Alberta since 1956. Once fully staffed, it will employ more than 225 people including police officers, peace officers, outreach workers, social workers, nurses, and civilian staff.

Current Postings
The Peace Officer and Peace Officer Sergeant postings both close May 25. The Experienced Police Officer posting open to sworn officers of any rank from any Canadian service closes May 27, with that class starting July 27. The Policing Services Supervisor posting closes May 29. The Police Officer Class 5 recruit posting closes September 25.

Peace Officer Positions
Peace Officers with Grande Prairie Enforcement Services conduct foot and vehicle patrols, enforce municipal bylaws and provincial statutes, respond to public safety concerns, and work alongside community partners on traffic safety and public education. Shift work includes days, evenings, and weekends. The Sergeant posting includes operational supervision and leadership responsibilities.
Starting wage is $46.13 an hour under the CUPE Collective Agreement, approximately $96,000 a year based on a standard 40-hour week.
Required documents before any offer is made: high school diploma, driver's licence, current driver's abstract, a PARE certificate or equivalent, and a Standard First Aid Certificate.
Police Officer Positions
Recruit constables start at $37.69 an hour $78,395 a year and receive full salary and benefits throughout the six-month training program, which runs in Grande Prairie. The pay scale from there:
Constable 4 is $84,198 annually. Constable 3 is $95,804. Constable 2 is $107,411. Constable 1 is $116,126. Senior Constable I at seven years is $124,259. Senior Constable II at eleven years is $126,588. Sergeants and Detectives are paid $139,360. Staff Sergeants earn $153,296 a year.
All uniforms and equipment are provided.

Experienced Officer Positions
Officers coming from other Canadian services receive a $25,000 transitional allowance. Years of service are credited for wage placement and vacation entitlement. Benefits include the Special Forces Pension Plan with pension transfer options, health, dental and vision coverage, an Employee Assistance Program, and a health and wellness account. The experienced officer program involves a four-week training course rather than the full six-month recruit program.
The GPPS accepts applications from currently serving sworn officers in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The service has no Corporal rank Corporals from other agencies apply through the experienced officer posting.
Applicants are responsible for their own costs for vision and hearing tests, the A-PREP medical clearance, and driver's abstract. These are not reimbursed.
Hiring Process for Recruit Constables
The process runs nine stages: the Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test, the A-PREP physical assessment, a behavioural descriptive interview, a personal disclosure interview, a polygraph, psychological testing, a background investigation, a selection board review, and a conditional offer requiring a pre-employment medical and Enhanced RCMP Reliability clearance.
For experienced officers, the process includes the A-PREP, an interview, psychological evaluation, background investigation, and potentially a polygraph.

Basic Requirements for Police Officer Positions
Applicants must be at least 18, hold a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, hold a valid driver's licence with no more than five demerits graduated licences are not accepted and have no criminal convictions without a pardon.
Experienced officer applicants need a minimum of 18 months of continuous sworn service, and must have been active within one year of applying if they have less than five years of experience, or within two years if they have five or more.
