The Decision
City of Lethbridge City Council has approved $33,000 in funding to support the 2026 Tae Kwon-Do International World Cup, set to take place July 4–5 at the Lethbridge Trade and Convention Centre.
The funding comes through the city’s Major Community Event grant program and was approved through the Community Issues Committee as part of broader efforts to attract events with economic impact.

The Business Case
This isn’t just about sport. The event is expected to bring more than 600 competitors from over 20 countries, along with roughly 400 spectators and dozens of officials and volunteers. In total, that’s over 1,000 visitors coming into Lethbridge over a single weekend. According to projections, the tournament could generate nearly $750,000 in direct local spending across hotels, restaurants, transportation and retail. The total event budget sits at approximately $141,000, with most revenues coming from registrations, ticket sales and sponsorships.

Why Council Backed It
City officials framed the decision as both an economic and cultural investment. Mayor Blaine Hyggen said the event builds on Lethbridge’s long-standing connection to martial arts and presents an opportunity to showcase the city to an international audience.
“Our City Council is pleased to support this event, which is anticipated to have significant social and economic impacts,” Hyggen said.
More Than a One-Time Event
Organizers say the impact won’t end when the tournament does. The event is expected to leave behind equipment and infrastructure that can support future competitions, while also helping grow local interest in martial arts and youth participation. For Lethbridge, it’s also a signal that the city is actively positioning itself to host larger events and compete for tourism dollars typically captured by bigger centres.
The Bigger Picture
For a mid-sized city, these kinds of approvals are less about the headline number and more about strategy. Bringing in 1,000+ visitors, even for a short window, creates a ripple effect across the local economy and helps build a case for future events. It’s a relatively small investment upfront, with the expectation of a much larger return.
