A man is dead after being struck by a vehicle pulling out of a parking spot on 16 Avenue S.W. Sunday night in circumstances Calgary police are still working to understand.
The incident happened at approximately 8:20 p.m. on April 12, near 8 Street S.W., across from Tomkins Park. Police say the man crossed 16 Avenue and, before reaching the curb, fell or laid down on the roadway in front of a parked Nissan Rogue.
Several minutes later, the driver returned to the vehicle, started the engine, and pulled out driving over the pedestrian. He was transported to hospital, where he later died.

Autopsy Underway
The man has not been identified. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine whether his death resulted from injuries sustained in the collision, or whether a separate medical event may have played a role in why he was on the ground before the vehicle moved.
That distinction matters for the investigation. Police have not announced any charges.
Driver Remained at Scene
The driver, a man in his 50s, stayed at the scene and was not physically injured. Calgary Police's Traffic Section is leading the investigation.
