Stony Plain’s Costco is no longer just a plan.
Construction is underway on the new warehouse at Highway 16A and Veterans Boulevard, and the developer is targeting a summer 2027 opening.
Edmonton-based Fillmore Construction says its crews have been on site since early September. They’re pushing to finish as much sitework and foundation work as they can before winter hits.
It’s a big step since the Stony Plain Costco was first revealed in September.
Crews racing winter
Fillmore shared the update on Facebook this week.
“Our team in Stony Plain on the new Costco Wholesale warehouse site has been hard at work since the beginning of September,” the company wrote. The goal is to get “as much of the sitework and foundations completed before winter rears its head.”
Fillmore credited its staff, subtrades, consultants and Costco for the progress.
“We look forward to sharing further updates as progress continues to bring this fantastic new service to the Town of Stony Plain and surrounding communities,” it wrote.
Fillmore is an Edmonton general contractor that has been building commercial projects across Western Canada since 1991.
When will the Stony Plain Costco open?
The developer is targeting summer 2027.
Costco hasn’t announced an official opening date, and that target could change as construction moves along.
What’s planned
The warehouse will anchor the Stony Plain Power Centre, a commercial development by Hughes Commercial Realty Group. Costco bought about 20 acres for the site, according to Hughes.
The plan includes:
A Costco warehouse
A Costco gas bar
A separate liquor store
About 1,000 parking stalls
The developer’s earlier plans also showed room for more retail and a 56-court pickleball facility. Neither has been confirmed.
Costco hasn’t released the size of the warehouse.
Where it’s being built
The site is at Highway 16A and Veterans Boulevard, also known as 28 Street. It’s on Stony Plain’s eastern edge, at the entrance from Spruce Grove.
The developer says the store could serve more than 185,000 people across Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Parkland County and west Edmonton. Highway 16A also makes it an easy stop for people coming from farther west.
Right now, the closest Costco is the West Edmonton warehouse on Winterburn Road.
Road work at Highway 16A and 28 Street
If you’ve driven past lately, you’ve seen the construction.
The Town of Stony Plain is building a new intersection at Highway 16A and 28 Street. Access between 28 Street and Highway 16A is closed until late November.
Council set aside about $2.4 million for the intersection in July 2025, paid for by off-site levies from the developer.
Will the Stony Plain Costco be hiring?
Not yet. Costco hasn’t announced hiring for Stony Plain.
But if the store follows the same pattern as northeast Edmonton, hiring could start well before the doors open.
At Manning Town Centre in northeast Edmonton, Costco held a job fair in September while the warehouse was still under construction. It was hiring for front-end assistants, stockers, maintenance, deli, meat, bakery and food court roles. Most were entry-level. Forklift operators needed experience. Costco pays on set wage scales, with raises tied to hours worked or yearly increases, depending on the job.

Other new Costcos coming to Alberta
Stony Plain isn’t the only new Costco in the works:
Manning Town Centre, northeast Edmonton: Under construction near 153 Avenue and Ebbers Boulevard. The gas bar is expected to open before the warehouse.
Bingham Crossing, Springbank: Under construction west of Calgary in Rocky View County, with a fall 2026 opening expected.
Lloydminster: Under construction at 75 Avenue and 19 Street, with no opening date yet.

What’s next
The next milestones are finishing the foundations before the deep freeze, then getting the building up.
Fillmore says it’ll keep posting updates. Costco hasn’t announced hiring dates, membership promotions or an opening date yet.
For now, summer 2027 is the target.
