A long-rumoured Costco west of Edmonton has appeared by name on a commercial developer's plans for Stony Plain.
Hughes Commercial Realty Group updated its marketing material for the Stony Plain Power Centre and Business Park on September 14, describing the development as being "anchored by a brand-new Costco development."
Earlier versions of the property listing referred only to a "pending big-box retailer."
Costco has not officially announced a Stony Plain warehouse, and no opening date has been provided. The developer's decision to identify Costco is the clearest indication yet that the retailer is connected to the site.

Where the new Costco would be located
The proposed Costco is shown near Highway 16A and Veterans Boulevard, at the entrance to Stony Plain.
The site is part of a larger commercial and business development intended to serve Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Parkland County and communities farther west of Edmonton.
Hughes Commercial Realty Group estimates the surrounding service area at more than 185,000 people.
The developer's site plan also shows space for another big-box retailer northeast of the proposed Costco, and a facility labelled as a 56-court pickleball facility. Neither has been publicly confirmed by an operator.

When could the Stony Plain Costco open
There is no confirmed construction or opening date.
The developer's brochure gives the first phase of the power centre a target tenant-possession window between fall 2027 and spring 2028. That timeline applies to the development phase and shouldn't be treated as an official Costco opening window.
Later phases have no posted possession dates.
Costco says through its media-request policy that it does not comment on warehouses expected to open more than three months in the future. Its Canadian coming-soon page does not currently list Stony Plain, and that page generally shows locations much closer to opening.
Costco's silence doesn't rule out the project. It also isn't confirmation.

What a confirmed Costco looks like
The contrast with other Alberta projects is useful.
Lloydminster has a confirmed November opening, with a location, a job count, a gas bar and a published timeline. Our coverage is here.
Manning Town Centre in northeast Edmonton is under construction, with permits issued and a visible building. Our coverage is here.
Bingham Crossing northwest of Calgary has a $25.8-million building permit issued by Rocky View County in January 2026 and a fall 2026 opening listed on Alberta Major Projects. Our coverage is here.
Stony Plain has a name on a brochure. That's a meaningful step, and it's how these projects typically first surface publicly, but it sits well behind the other three.

What has been confirmed, and what hasn't
Where the project currently stands:
A commercial developer has named Costco as the planned anchor
The Costco name appears on the updated site plan
The developer's listing gives the location as Highway 16A and Veterans Boulevard
Phase one targets tenant possession between fall 2027 and spring 2028
Costco has not announced the warehouse
No Costco-specific development or building permit has been publicly identified
No construction start or opening date has been confirmed
Until permits or a Costco announcement appear, the warehouse should be described as planned, not approved or under construction.
A $2.4-million intersection is being built near the development
The Town of Stony Plain is constructing a new intersection at Highway 16A and 28 Street to support development north of the highway.
Council originally approved a $2.4-million allocation for the project in July 2025, with the money to come from off-site levies collected from the developer. In August 2026, council gave first reading to a bylaw authorizing up to $2.4 million in borrowing for the work.
Construction is already underway. The Town said access between 28 Street and Highway 16A would be closed from August 21 until late November 2026 while the intersection is built.
There is, however, a location discrepancy in the available listings.
Alberta's Regional Dashboard places the Stony Plain Power Centre at Highway 16A and 28 Street. The developer's listing identifies it as Highway 16A and Veterans Boulevard. Municipal planning documents treat 28 Street and Veterans Boulevard as separate roads.
It isn't yet clear whether the larger development extends between both roads, whether the listings use different reference points, or whether one address needs updating.
The Town has not publicly identified the intersection work as a Costco project.

The closest regular Costco is in west Edmonton
The closest regular Costco for most Stony Plain and Spruce Grove residents is the west Edmonton warehouse at 7259 Winterburn Road NW.
A Stony Plain location would give communities west of Edmonton their first nearby conventional Costco warehouse, saving residents of Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County a longer trip into the city.
It would also bring considerably more traffic to the Highway 16A commercial corridor.
What happens next
The next meaningful sign would be a development or building permit specifically identifying Costco or its proposed warehouse.
The Town of Stony Plain publishes notices for certain approved development permits, and major commercial projects can also appear through municipal records or the Alberta Major Projects database.
Costco would likely add the warehouse to its coming-soon page closer to opening, though the company's public confirmation may come considerably later than the initial planning and permitting work.
