Lloydminster has been waiting for a Costco for years. The sign is up, the foundation work is underway, and the building permit is on the books. It's happening.
Construction is active at 75 Avenue and 19 Street on Lloydminster's southwest side a 19.6-acre parcel next to the ATCO substation that has been earmarked for this development for several years. The City of Lloydminster issued a building permit in late 2025, and by February 2026 a Costco sign had gone up at the site. Foundation work visible from the road confirmed the project was moving.

Where exactly is it being built?
The new Costco is going up at 75 Avenue and 19 Street on Lloydminster's west side, next to the ATCO substation. The site sits in a part of the city that is seeing active residential development, with land set aside nearby for a potential Highway 16 bypass in the future. If you've driven south on 75 Avenue recently, you've likely already noticed the sign and the activity on site.

How big will it be?
The warehouse is approximately 160,000 square feet on a 19.6-acre site with roughly 900 parking stalls. That's a standard large-format Costco footprint about three times the size of a typical big-box store. Expect a gas bar as well, which is standard for most Canadian Costco locations.
What has the city done to prepare?
Lloydminster has been investing in the surrounding road infrastructure for over a year ahead of the opening. The city widened roads along 75 Avenue between 12 Street and 19 Street to handle the increased traffic volume a Costco brings. City council approved an $824,862 contract with Primary Engineering and Construction Corporation for traffic signal installation at the 75 Avenue intersections. A separate $2.44 million road upgrade contract covering the full stretch from 12 Street to 19 Street was also approved.
The city committed nearly $3.3 million in road work before the store has even opened.

What did the Mayor say?
Mayor Gerald Aalbers confirmed the building permit publicly in October 2025, speaking to the Lloydminster Concerned Citizens for Seniors Care Society. "I understand there is a building plan in place that's been approved by the city for Costco," he said. "A building permit has been issued. I have not received a formal invitation to the grand opening yet."
When the Costco sign went up at the site in February 2026, Aalbers issued a formal statement. "Like many residents, I was pleased to see the recently installed sign at the southwest worksite confirming Costco's planned arrival in Lloydminster. On behalf of our community, let me be among the first to say, 'Welcome, Costco!' A retail development of this scale has the potential to be transformative for our city."

Who will it serve?
Lloydminster sits directly on the Alberta-Saskatchewan border the only city in Canada that straddles a provincial boundary. The new Costco will draw members from both provinces, pulling in shoppers from Battleford, North Battleford, Vermilion, Wainwright, and the surrounding rural communities who currently drive to Edmonton or Saskatoon for their Costco runs.
Jackie Tomayer, president of the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, put it plainly. "Costco's move to Lloydminster shines a brighter spotlight on our city, reinforces confidence in our market, and encourages additional businesses and entrepreneurs to see the potential here."

When will it open?
No official opening date has been announced Costco doesn't publicly confirm new locations until within a few months of opening. But the timeline points toward fall 2026.
The Alberta Major Projects registry lists the Lloydminster Costco schedule as 2026 to 2026, meaning the province expects the project to be completed within this calendar year. The building permit was issued in late 2025 with a one-year window to proceed, putting the construction deadline at approximately October or November 2026. With foundation work already underway and nearly $3.3 million in road infrastructure already in place, a fall 2026 opening is the most reasonable estimate though Costco has not confirmed a date and the timeline could shift.
This article will be updated when an opening date is confirmed.

Other Alberta Costco openings in 2026
