A man was found dead after a shooting in northeast Calgary early Sunday morning.
Calgary police were called to the 1100 block of Cornerstone Boulevard N.E. at approximately 12:55 a.m. for reports of shots being fired. Officers arrived and located one man who was deceased, in the parking lot of a shopping complex.
The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit is investigating.
Police say the shooting is believed to be targeted. No arrests have been made.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in the coming days.
What "targeted" means
The word appears in almost every police statement about a shooting like this, and it's worth understanding what it does and doesn't say.
It means investigators have reason to believe the victim was specifically sought out rather than shot at random. That assessment is usually based on early evidence at the scene or on what police already know about the people involved.
What it doesn't mean is that the danger has passed. No arrests have been made, and police haven't said whether they believe there is any ongoing risk to the public.
It also isn't a conclusion. Early characterizations sometimes change as an investigation develops.
Where it happened
Cornerstone is a newer community in northeast Calgary, north of Country Hills Boulevard near Stoney Trail and the airport lands. It's one of the city's fastest-growing residential areas, largely built out over the past decade.
The 1100 block of Cornerstone Boulevard is a commercial strip, and the shooting happened in a parking lot rather than on a residential street.
That's relevant to the appeal for footage. Businesses in a retail complex are far more likely to have exterior cameras than houses are, and they're more likely to be pointed at a parking lot.
If you have footage
If you work at or own a business in that complex, check your exterior cameras. Recordings from roughly midnight to 1:30 a.m. Sunday are the most likely source of usable video, and most commercial systems overwrite within days or weeks depending on the setup.
If you live nearby and have a doorbell camera or security footage covering a street, walkway or parking area, check the same window and save anything now.
The same applies to dash cam footage if you drove through Cornerstone overnight. Vehicles that can be ruled out matter as much as vehicles that can't.
Keep the original file rather than a screen recording, and contact police rather than posting it.
