How Calgary Handles Missing Persons
Calgary Police receive an average of 3,800 missing persons reports every year roughly 10 per day. The service has maintained a dedicated Missing Persons coordinator since 1957, and currently operates a full Missing Persons Team consisting of one sergeant, three constables and one analyst who conduct daily reviews of all new reports.
There is no mandatory waiting period before a missing persons report can be filed. Calgary Police ask the public to report immediately if a disappearance is out of character for the individual that judgment, rather than any 24 or 48-hour rule, is what determines how urgently a case is prioritized.
According to CPS data, more than 99 per cent of missing persons in Calgary are eventually located, regardless of race or background. Files remain active until the missing person is found.
