Three Edmonton police officers fatally shot an armed man Sunday morning after responding to a reported shooting inside a west Edmonton home.
Officers were called to a residence near Donsdale Drive and 45 Avenue at 9:59 a.m. Police had received a report that a man with a firearm entered the home and shot a woman and an infant.
When officers arrived, they were "met by witnesses and the injured parties and immediately began establishing containment of the residence," according to EPS.
The 36-year-old man then opened the front door armed with a gun. When he did not comply with verbal direction, three officers discharged their firearms.
The EPS tactical emergency medical support team attempted life-saving measures. He died at the scene.
The woman and infant
Police confirmed Monday that a woman suffered a gunshot wound and "the infant presented with other physical injuries."
Injuries to both are believed to be non-threatening.
No police officers were injured.
Police say it was domestic violence-related
EPS said Monday the man and the injured parties were known to each other, and that "this event is believed to be a domestic violence-related incident."
The man's name has not been released.
ASIRT investigating the shooting
The Police Review Commission was notified and directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team to investigate.
ASIRT investigates incidents involving serious injury or death that may have resulted from police conduct. Its investigation is separate from EPS.
Investigators are expected to collect physical and digital evidence, interview witnesses and review any available video, including police body-camera footage. EPS began deploying body-worn cameras in 2024.
The investigation will examine whether the officers' use of force was legally justified under section 25 of the Criminal Code. Once complete, ASIRT can refer the case for a charging decision or publicly conclude that charges are not warranted.
ASIRT files typically take a year or more, and completed investigations are published.
Three officers discharged their firearms
EPS said three officers discharged their weapons.
In Alberta, officers involved in a fatal shooting are typically placed on administrative duties while ASIRT investigates. EPS has not said whether that has happened here, or identified the officers.
ASIRT does not generally name officers under investigation, and officers are not compelled to provide statements. That's a constitutional protection, and it's one reason these files move slowly.
Where it happened
Donsdale is a residential neighbourhood in west Edmonton, south of Stony Plain Road near the river valley.
Police tape remained around the property Monday, with the front door open and a shattered plant pot on the steps.

Residents near Donsdale Drive and 45 Avenue should preserve any relevant doorbell, security or dash camera footage before it is automatically deleted. Most systems overwrite within days.
