Jagdeep Singh, a man being held on suspicion of links to organized crime, managed to slip away from Rockyview Hospital while under supervision for a medical assessment. The Canada Border Services Agency had taken Singh into custody as part of an ongoing federal investigation.
News of the escape surprised many in Calgary, where such incidents are rare. Witnesses at Rockyview said security seemed routine until police activity ramped up. Authorities have yet to clarify how Singh left the building or whether he had help.
Community residents raised concerns about safety and the oversight of detainees in hospital settings. “People expect their hospitals to be secure, especially if someone in custody is involved,” said longtime Calgary resident Mark Reynolds.
The CBSA said in a brief statement that they are working closely with local police to locate Singh and review procedures. Calgary police urge anyone with information to contact them immediately.
