Jimmy John's is coming to Calgary.
The American sandwich chain is opening its first location in the city in University District this fall, its second Alberta restaurant after the Sherwood Park store that opened in April.
"University District is a natural fit for Jimmy John's, bringing together a growing residential community, a vibrant Retail Main Street and thousands of students, professionals and visitors from nearby institutions," said Angelo Ragas, brand leader at Foodtastic for Jimmy John's.

Why this corner of Calgary
University District sits in northwest Calgary, directly west of the University of Calgary campus and next to both Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children's Hospital.
That's tens of thousands of students, a hospital complex staffed around the clock, and a residential development built around a purpose-designed retail street, all within a few blocks of each other.
For a chain whose entire model is speed and short delivery radiuses, it's about the densest concentration of hungry people in the city outside downtown. A driver can reach a residence hall, a hospital break room and a condo tower without leaving the neighbourhood.
The Retail Main Street strip has been filling steadily since the district opened, and fast casual is the category it's been pulling.

What Jimmy John's actually is
If you've only heard the name, here's the short version.
The chain builds sandwiches on bread baked fresh in-store, with meats and vegetables hand-sliced daily rather than arriving pre-cut. The Canadian menu carries 15 sandwiches, and any of them can be toasted or ordered as an "Unwich," which swaps the bread for a lettuce wrap.
Menu highlights include the Meatball Parmesan, topped with marinara and melted provolone and parmesan on toasted garlic-butter bread, and the Chicken Bacon Ranch. The house-brand Jimmy Chips are a fixture.
What the brand is genuinely known for in the United States is speed. Jimmy John's built its reputation on in-house delivery, employing its own drivers rather than relying on third-party apps, which lets it control timing in a way most competitors can't.

It's bigger than it looks in Canada
Jimmy John's has more than 2,800 locations in the United States as of 2026.
Canada is new. The first Canadian store opened November 19, 2024, in Etobicoke near Sherway Gardens. Ontario locations followed through 2025, including Vaughan and a flagship on King Street West in Toronto's Entertainment District, and by the end of that year roughly 11 to 12 restaurants were operating nationally.
Then it moved west. Winnipeg got Canada's first Jimmy John's drive-thru on Pembina Highway in September 2025. Saskatoon opened in February 2026. Alberta followed in April.
The expansion runs through Foodtastic, the Montreal-based franchisor that operates more than 1,200 restaurants across multiple brands. Foodtastic has said it plans to open up to 200 Jimmy John's locations in Canada over the next decade.
Jimmy John's itself belongs to Inspire Brands, which also owns Arby's, Dunkin', Buffalo Wild Wings, Baskin-Robbins and Sonic.
Alberta got it first in Sherwood Park
The province's first Jimmy John's opened at 663 Wye Road in Sherwood Park in April 2026.
It's owned and operated by Ravi Prakash and Khushbu Singh through the Edmonton-based O & O Group of Companies, who also run a Pita Pit and Second Cup combination location in the community.
"This marks our very first Jimmy John's location, and it's just the beginning," Prakash said at the time. "We have ambitious plans to expand with 12 to 13 additional locations across Edmonton and its surrounding suburbs."
He was candid about the environment they're expanding into. "The journey hasn't been easy in a challenging Canadian restaurant landscape," he said. "Despite that, we remain resilient, committed, and passionate about enhancing the food scene with exciting and high-quality brands for our community."
One store is unlikely to stay one store
Foodtastic uses a clustering strategy, building density in one region before moving into the next.
That matters here. In Winnipeg the pattern was three locations announced close together. In Edmonton, the operator has stated plans for a dozen more. Calgary is a larger market than either.
Which is worth watching if you don't live in the northwest. University District is a specific and fairly narrow catchment, and wherever the next sites land will say more about how the brand reads the city.
What isn't known
No opening date beyond this fall. No exact address within University District. No confirmed additional Calgary locations, no hours, and no word on whether delivery launches with the store.
