Alberta’s biggest Goodwill is coming to Calgary
Calgary’s thrift scene is about to level up. Goodwill Industries of Alberta is opening the largest Goodwill store in the province just off Glenmore Trail near Chinook Centre, and it’s being built as a flagship, not an afterthought.
The new Goodwill location at 306 Glenmore Trail SW opens at 9 am on Friday, May 22, 2026. The organization is promising more floor space, more stock, and a layout that actually lets you browse without elbowing through packed racks every two metres.
A thrift store that feels like a proper shop
Instead of the dim, overstuffed vibe people still associate with some thrift shops, this Calgary Goodwill is going for bright, open, and easy to navigate. The footprint is significantly larger than a standard Goodwill, with wide aisles and clearly marked sections for clothing, home goods, books, furniture, and the random “how is this even here?” finds that keep thrifters coming back.
Goodwill is framing it as a modern thrift experience: still affordable and donation-driven, but closer to a mainstream retailer in how it looks and flows. The idea is simple — if it’s easier to shop, more people will come through the doors, and more funds will go back into community programs.

Behind the scenes: jobs, training, and “the power of work”
What you don’t see from the parking lot is the other half of this building’s purpose. Alongside the sales floor, the Chinook & Glenmore Goodwill has dedicated space for Goodwill’s employment programs, which support people facing barriers to work.
Participants get real shifts, real responsibilities, and real experience in everything from sorting donations to running the till. With the extra square footage, Goodwill says it can bring more people into those programs and create more long-term job opportunities in Calgary.
“Our goal is to strengthen the community by creating opportunity,” said Dale Monaghan, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Alberta, as the new store was announced. For shoppers, that means every haul of vintage jackets or dishes is also helping fund local training and support.

Why this location matters for Calgary thrifters
This isn’t Goodwill’s first move in the city. In the last few years, Calgary has picked up a new Sunridge store and a Goodwill “Bins” outlet, where items get one last shot at being sold by the pound before they’re recycled. But the Chinook & Glenmore spot is different: it’s centrally located, highly visible from a major corridor, and positioned as Alberta’s largest Goodwill under one roof.
For thrifters, that likely means faster turnover of donations, bigger variety, and more chances to score everything from workwear to weird art to mid-century furniture in a single stop. For the neighbourhood, it turns an everyday errand strip into a destination for bargain hunters.
